Trivia Dominoes: Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

San Francisco Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval was the World Series MVP in 2012. In Game 1 of that World Series, Sandoval hit three home runs — two of them off Justin Verlander. He joined Babe Ruth, Reggie Jackson, and Albert Pujols as the only players in MLB history to hit three home runs in a World Series game, and Sandoval is the first in history to hit those home runs in his first three plate appearances (in the 1st, 3rd, and 5th innings).

Carlos Pujol was captain of FC Barcelona for nearly 10 years.

Joseph Pujol was a French vaudeville performer, known for his artistry with control and even musicality of his flatulence. He used the stage name Le Petomane, “The Fart Maniac”, a name which was borrowed by Mel Brooks for Harvey Korman’s character in Blazing Saddles.

Gypsy Rose Lee (née Rose Louise Hovick) got her start in vaudeville as a young teenager but switched to striptease. She became famous not only as an ecdysiast, but as an author, talk show host, political activist, dogbreeder, etc. She was played by Natalie Wood in the 1962 film Gypsy which actually focuses on Rose’s mother, also named Rose, played in the movie by Rosalind Russell late in her career. Miss Russell earned her fifth and final Golden Globe for the role, a record surpassed only by Meryl Streep.

Gypsy was a musical but Russell was not a singer and her songs were dubbed. However her actual voice was recorded and is available at Youtube.

Lata Mangeshkar is probably the most prolific singer in world history. She is verified as having voice-dubbed over 5,000 songs in Indian films, and the number is probably closer to ten thousand. Guinness has published the claim of 11,000, in 36 languages. She started her professional Bollywood career singing in films in 1947, still makes appearances, and last recorded in 2012.

General Dwight D. Eisenhower was on the cover of Time magazine’s 23 June 1947 issue.

It is customary for the outgoing president to escort the incoming president to his inauguration. Truman and Eisenhower broke with this tradition, and little secret was made of the fact it was because the two men could not stand each other.

During the First World War, Captain Harry Truman was the commanding officer of a field artillery battery.

Although named after his Secretary of State and designed by “Wise Men” like George Kennan, the “buck” (responsibility) for the Marshall Plan “stopped” at the desk of Harry Truman. Its huge expense, political risk, and success make him one of the greatest Presidents ever.

Truman had great respect for Ike, even offering to stand down and let him be the Democratic candidate for President in 1948. But great anger developed during the 1952 campaign.

By tradition, the Three Wise Men who visited the infant Jesus in Bethlehem were named Gaspar, Melchior, and Balthazar, but those names do not appear in the Bible.

Wiki: Encyclopædia Britannica states: “according to Western church tradition, Balthasar is often represented as a king of Arabia, Melchior as a king of Persia, and Gaspar as a king of India.” These names apparently derive from a Greek manuscript probably composed in Alexandria around 500, and which has been translated into Latin with the title Excerpta Latina Barbari. Another Greek document from the 8th century, of presumed Irish origin and translated into Latin with the title Collectanea et Flores, continues the tradition of three kings and their names and gives additional details.

Harry Truman and Bess Wallace first met as children in their one-room schoolhouse in Independence, Missouri. Harry died in 1972. At her death in 1982, at the age of 97, Bess became the longest-lived First Lady.

Indeed, not only are the “three wise men” not named in the Bible, they aren’t even numbered. The Biblical text only describes them as, “some men.”

Ninja’d! By Elvis, and David. So I will add:

In his 1948 election victory inauguration, Harry Truman took the oath of office on two Bibles: the personal one he had used for the first oath, and a Gutenberg Bible donated by the citizens of Independence, Missouri.

The Hon. Keith Ellison, representing Minnesota’s Fifth District in the US Congress, is the first Muslim in the House of Representative. He took the oath in 2007 with a copy of the Quran that had been owned by Thomas Jefferson.

After the Gutenberg Bible was produced from movable type, the invention caught on very quickly. Most of the earliest books printed with Gutenberg’s methods were in Latin, e.g. Cicero’s De Oratore. The first such printing of the Arabic Quran was apparently done in Venice in 1537.

Certificates of indulgences were one of the first items Johannes Gutenberg had printed.

The Colorado River is the longest river that lies entirely inside the state of Texas. Not to be confused with the other Colorado River, which flows through the Grand Canyon, then dies in the desert before reaching the sea, either through evaporation,. or dispersal into irrigation canals.

At 1,896 miles long, the Rio Grande River is the longest river that runs through Texas.
