Many people in the St. Louis area go to Pere Marquette State Park in the winter months to watch the many bald eagles that return from the north to feed on the fish that go through the three main rivers in the area, the Mississippi, the Missouri, and the Illinois Rivers. When the fish pass through the locks and dams along the Mississippi they get a little stunned, momentarily, and they become easier pickings for the bald eagles. This happens mainly at the locks and dams in Alton and East Alton IL, and in Winfield and Clarksville MO.
The bald eagles always return to the same airy (nest) each and every winter, so they are easy to find. Also, bald eagles mate for life.
The Pere Marquette State Park Bald Eagle Viewing Program is a great way to spend 6 hours on a Saturday morning.
George H.W. Bush’s first White House chief of staff was John Sununu, former Governor of New Hampshire, who had been instrumental to Bush’s winning the state’s primary in 1988.
