In 1851, in an annual 98 km club sailing race among 16 ships around an island, the race was won by a team from not just another club, but from another country altogether. The race was around the Isle of Wight, the date was 22 August 1851, the winning yacht was the American schooner, America, and the winning trophy won became known as the America’s Cup.
1851 marked the start of the Australian gold rushes after Edward Hargrave’s discovery of payable amounts near Bathurst, NSW. Soon gold was also being found in the Bendigo district in VIC.
The gold rushes had a huge effect on Australia’s population, which increased from around 430,000 in 1851 to about 1.7 million in 1871.
The Constitution Act, 1871, passed by the British Parliament, retroactively validated the creation of the Province of Manitoba by the Parliament of Canada. It also authorised the Parliament of Canada to govern Canadian territory not part of any province, and to create new provinces. Saskatchewan and Alberta were created using that power in 1905.

Bullitt County, Kentucky, is named after Alexander Scott Bullitt, a pioneer and early settler in Kentucky. Bullitt’s uncle, Thomas Bullitt, served with George Washington.

George Washington was also compared to Fabius Maximus for his fight-well-and-run-away tactics during the American Revolution.
