The LaPorte Anomaly is a meteorological phenomenon in which that northern Indiana city, just west of South Bend, has a noticeably different climate, marked by high rainfall, from the surrounding area. It is believed due to condensation on airborne dust particles created by Chicago manufacturing industries.

Side-bar:

The Civil War memorial in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana, is the biggest in the U.S.

AM General created the M998 HMMWV, or “Humvee”, in 1979. This 1¼-ton truck replaced the M151 Jeep. The U.S. Army awarded AM General a prototype contract in 1981. In March 1983, AM General won an initial $1.2 billion contract to produce 55,000 Humvees.

AM General is based in South Bend, IN.

The first civilian to own a Humvee was Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Back in my military days I was driving the M151 Jeep when the Humvee (H1) came out. Extremely capable, large, with high ground clearance and suspension travel. But the M151 Jeep was small, nimble, light and especially in light forests very capable at maneuvering around trees.

The Humvee H1 was made with seven vertical openings in the grill, like a Jeep, reflecting their common heritage with American Motors (Jeep was originally a Willys brand, and AM General was originally Studebaker’s truck operation). This became a trademark issue when GM bought the Hummer civilian brand, but was eventually resolved by GM redesigning the grill for the H2 model.

General Phil Sheridan, victor of the Battle of Cedar Creek and a hero of the Civil War, was unsure whether he had been born in Ireland, on a ship crossing the Atlantic from there, or in New York City, where his parents settled. It became an issue when he briefly flirted with a Presidential run.

Hyacinth Bucket often talked with her son and only child Sheridan (“How lovely to hear from you!”) on the telephone, and sometimes with his “roommate” Tarquin, but he never actually appeared on the BBC show “Keeping Up Appearances”, owing to his busy schedule at university (“The Poly”) studying Tapestry Design and Advanced Needlework.

The feast of Saint Hyacinth of Poland is celebrated on 17 August.

Frontiersman Davy Crockett, black power activist Marcus Garvey, actress/bombshell Mae West, FBI official/“Deep Throat” Mark Felt and author Jonathan Franzen were all born on August 17.

The Gospel of Mark is the shortest of the four gospels and is believed to be the earliest written.

The Gospel of Mark is the focus of this calendar year’s schedule of rotating readings during church services, or lectionary, or more specifically, evangeliary.

While the Roman Catholic Pope is considered the apostolic descendent of St Peter, the Coptic Patriarch of Alexandria (also called Pope) is the Apostolic descendent of St. Mark.

Coptic is the modern descendant of Ancient Egyptian.

Rock guitarist Mark St. John played briefly for the band, Kiss. He is the only Kiss member not to appear on any album front cover.

The Hagar Qim megalithic temple complex in Malta predates the Egyptian pyramids.

The seven megalithic temples on the islands of Malta and Gozo are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The two temples of Ggantija on the island of Gozo are notable for their gigantic Bronze Age structures. On the island of Malta, the temples of Hagar Qin, Mnajdra and Tarxien are unique architectural masterpieces, given the limited resources available to their builders. The Ta’Hagrat and Skorba complexes show how the tradition of temple-building was handed down in Malta.

Malti, the language of Malta, is the only Semitic language written with Latin script.
