It is derived from the account in St John’s Gospel of the behaviour of the Apostle Saint Thomas, who declared that he could not accept the reality of the resurrection of Jesus until he had seen and felt the wounds in Jesus’ body.

An apostle spoon is a spoon, usually silver or silver-plated, with an image of an apostle as the termination of the handle.
They originated in the early-fifteenth century in Europe and were often produced in sets of twelve or thirteen (where the thirteenth spoon had an image of the Lord). The British Museum in London has a set from England dating from 1536–7 which has a figure of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the thirteenth spoon.
