Trivia Dominoes: Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

The novelty song “All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth” includes the lyric:

It seems so long since I could say,
“Sister Susie sitting on a thistle!”
Gosh oh gee, how happy I’d be,
if I could only whistle.

George Rock, normally a trumpeter for Spike Jones and his City Slickers, performed the vocals for their hit recording of “All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth”, as well as in “I’m the Captain of the Space Ship”, “You Wanna Buy a Bunny?”, “I’m the Angel in the Christmas Play”, and “Happy New Year”. Rock’s voicing in each of those songs sounded remarkably like Kevin Clash’s voicing of Elmo on “Sesame Street”.

Peanut’s The Six Bunny Wunny series was first introduced in the Peanuts comic strip on July 26, 1970, when Charlie Brown read one of the books to Snoopy as a bedtime story. Titles in the series include:

The Jaguar XK-E, or E-type, was named the Top Sports Car of the 1960’s by* Sports Car International* magazine. On its release Enzo Ferrari called it “The most beautiful car ever made” (he was right). It is one of only six cars to be added to the permanent design collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

There have been two HMS Jaguars in the British Royal Navy, the second of which was a Leopard-class frigate launched in 1957 and later sold to the Bangladeshi Navy. She subsequently served as BNS Ali Haider before being decommissioned in January 2014.

Cool. Next time I go, I’ll bring some back too.

There are five members of the genus Panthera: the tiger, lion, jaguar, leopard and snow leopard. Only members of this genus can roar.

The video for Katy Perry’s hit song “Roar” shows her and her boyfriend surviving a plane crash in the jungle, where he is eaten by a tiger. She makes a spear from a stiletto heel but at first uses it only to retrieve a banana for a grateful monkey. She does use the spear to help tame the tiger after cornering it later, but her own roar is more effective.

The next year of the Tiger in the Chinese zodiac will be from 1 February 2022 to 21 January 2023.

A memorial arch to Oberlin College missionaries killed in the Chinese Boxer Rebellion stands on Tappan Square in Oberlin, Ohio. Graduating seniors traditionally march under the arch on their way to receive their diplomas, although some choose not to, in protest of what they see as the cultural imperialism of the missionaries.

In Canada, a province can opt out of a constitutional amendment to the division of powers between the federal and provincial governments. If the amendment relates to education or cultural matters, the opting-out province is constitutionally entitled to compensation from the federal government.

The major difference between a province and a territory in Canada is that provinces receive their power and authority from the Constitution Act, 1867, whereas territorial governments have powers delegated to them by the federal government. This means that while a change to the division of powers between the federal government and the provinces requires a constitutional amendment, a similar change affecting the territories can be performed unilaterally by the federal Parliament or government.

South Africa has nine provinces. They are: Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, North West and Western Cape.
Each province has its own premier and legislature.

Canada’s tenth province, Newfoundland & Labrador, was an independent Dominion, but went bankrupt in the Depression due to a combination of debt from WWI, the Depression, and bad political choices. It voluntarily surrendered its right of self-government to Britain in the 30s, and eventually joined Canada as the 10th province in 1949. Delegates from Newfoundland had attended the Quebec Conference in 1864, but Newfoundland decided not to join Confederation at that time.

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever originated in the United States but came from stock destined to sail from England. In the year 1807, an English brig wrecked off the coast of Maryland and crew and cargo were rescued by the ship Canton. Also rescued were two Newfoundland puppies, a dingy red dog named “Sailor,” and a black bitch named “Canton.” The two dogs, who turned out to be wonderful retrievers, were presented to the gentlemen who helped the shipwrecked, and many of the nondescript dogs used for retrieving in the area were bred to them, in addition to other outcrosses, such as the English Otter Hound, Flat-Coat, and Curly-Coated Retriever.

Hawaii’s state flag is the only state flag with a Union Jack in the canton.

The study of flags is known as vexillology, from vexilla, the Latin word for flag.

The Big Bang Theory’s Sheldon Cooper is really into vexillology.

Dr. Sheldon Cooper hails from Texas, which has one of the simplest state flags. To remember which side goes up, just remember either (a) the star rests on two points, as on the U.S. flag, or (b) the “bandage” (white stripe) goes over the “wound” (red stripe).

According to the roommate agreement, the Sheldon & Leonard’s apartment flag can only be flown upside down in emergencies.

(Once again, proof that the internet has a page for everything}

That flag would be described by a vexillologist, such as Sheldon and his lovely assistant Amy on their webcast series “Fun with Flags”, as a lion rampant, or, on a field azure.
