Trivia Dominoes: Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

Knox was recently exonerated and declared innocent by the Supreme Court of Cassation, the Italian court of last resort, ending all criminal proceedings against her. She is not a murderer, at least in the eyes of Italian justice.

Philmont Scout Ranch, a giant high-adventure area run by the Boy Scouts of America, is in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Cimarron, New Mexico.

Staurolite crystals are rare, and Taos, New Mexico is one of the few places where they can be found; they were once rather plentiful there. (When I was young, we called the small stones “taosite” but Googling suggests that this name is now even much rarer than the stones!)

There’s a New Mexico now? :dubious:

Billy Crystal was Jay Leno’s first guest as full-time host of “The Tonight Show”. Bill Murray was David Letterman’s first guest as host of “The Late Show with David Letterman”, and is a good bet to be his last, too.

“It’s Still a Good Life,” a sequel to the original Twilight Zone series episode “It’s a Good Life”, had Bill Mumy and Cloris Leachman reprise their roles of Anthony & Agnes Fremont from the original episode. Anthony Fremont’s daughter, Audrey, was played by Bill Mumy’s real life daughter Liliana Mumy.

Three separate periods of twilight are recognised in the morning before sunrise and in the evening after sunset:

  • *Civil *twilight, when the centre of the Sun is between zero and six degrees below the horizon. This is the limit at which twilight illumination is sufficient, under good weather conditions, for terrestrial objects to be clearly distinguished; at the beginning of morning civil twilight, or end of evening civil twilight, the horizon is clearly defined and the brightest stars are visible under good atmospheric conditions in the absence of moonlight or other illumination. In the morning before the beginning of civil twilight and in the evening after the end of civil twilight, artificial illumination is normally required to carry on ordinary outdoor activities.
  • *Nautical *twilight, when the centre of the Sun is between six and twelve degrees below the horizon. At the beginning or end of nautical twilight, under good atmospheric conditions and in the absence of other illumination, general outlines of ground objects may be distinguishable, but detailed outdoor operations are not possible, and the horizon is indistinct.
  • *Astronomical *twilight, when the centre of the Sun is between twelve and eighteen degrees below the horizon. Before the beginning of astronomical twilight in the morning and after the end of astronomical twilight in the evening the sun does not contribute to sky illumination; for a considerable interval after the beginning of morning twilight and before the end of evening twilight, sky illumination is so faint that it is practically imperceptible.

The total solar eclipse on 21 August 2017 will be the 22nd eclipse of the 77 members of Saros series 145. A saros is a period of 223 synodic months (approximately 6585.3211 days, or just under 18 years and 11 days), after which the Sun, Earth, and Moon return to approximately the same relative geometry.

Saros series 145 contains 77 eclipses in total:

  • 34 partial eclipses;
  • 1 annular eclipse; and
  • 41 total eclipses; and
  • 1 hybrid eclipse.

The saros began on 4 January 1639 and will end on 17 April 3009.

A sar is half of a saros. Edmund Halley was the first to apply the term saros to the eclipse cycle. He did so in 1691.

Wiki: Edmund Scientific has provided items used in television shows such as "House, “MythBusters”, “24”, “Modern Marvels”, and motion pictures such as Star Trek, and the 1975 version of Escape to Witch Mountain. Wah Chang, the artist who designed and built several props in the 1960s for the Star Trek television show, used moiré patterns found in the Edmund Scientific Educator’s and Designer’s Moiré Kit for the texture used in the Starfleet communicator props.

In the Simpsons episode “Two Bad Neighbors”, Bart Simpson releases locusts from a box labeled Edmund Scientific.

Modern Marvels has produced over 650 shows and is one of The History Channel’s longest running shows. It first aired on The History Channel’s first broadcast day, 01 January 1995.

Referring to the Harlem Globetrotters’ perennial patsy opponent, Homer Simpson once commented to his TV: “Ah, the Luftwaffe … the Washington Generals of the History Channel!”

From 1953 until 1995, the Washington Generals won only six games against the Harlem Globetrotters, the last in 1971, and lost more than 13,000. The Generals have undergone several name changes since.

Playing as the New Jersey Red, the Generals defeated the Globetrotters 100-99 on January 5, 1971 in Martin, Tennessee, ending their 2,495-game losing streak. Klotz credits the overtime win to a guard named Eddie Mahar, who was team captain.Harlem’s captain, Curly Neal, did not play in this game…

The Reds secured their victory when Klotz hit the winning basket with seconds left. Then Meadowlark Lemon missed a shot that would have given the game back to the Globetrotters. The timekeeper tried to stop the clock and couldn’t. When the final buzzer sounded, the crowd was dumbfounded and disappointed. Klotz described the fans’ reaction: "They looked at us like we killed Santa Claus

From 1954-59, the height of anti-Communist hysteria in the US, the Cincinnati Reds baseball club (originally the Red Stockings) were officially renamed the Redlegs, and the name Reds was removed from inside the C of their logo.

In 2003, as a response to France’s refusal to support the invasion of Iraq, Congressman Bob Ney (R-Ohio) ordered the Congressional cafeterias to change their menu items of French fries and French toast to “Freedom Fries” and “Freedom Toast” respectively. (Ney was chairman of the House Administration Committee at the time, so the changes fell under his purview.) The action was supported by some and lampooned by others – Knott’s Berry Farm temporarily changed the name of French fries to “American Fries”, while The Saturn Cafe in Santa Cruz, CA changed their menu to read “Impeach George W. Bush Fries.”

The name change on Capitol Hill remained in place until 2006, when menus were quietly reverted back to normal by Ney’s successor, after Bob Ney himself had resigned due to an unrelated political scandal.

After the defeat and exile of Napoléon in 1815, the French Marshal Michel Ney was arrested and tried for treason. He was condemned and sentenced to execution by firing squad. He refused to wear a blindfold and was allowed the right to give the order to fire, reportedly saying:

Only two states still have the firing squad as an option for execution, Oklahoma and Utah.

This method can be used in Utah if, and only if, the State isunable to obtain the drugs necessary to carry out a lethal injection.

Oklahoma offers firing squad only if lethal injection and electrocution are found unconstitutional.

The last execution carried out in New Zealand was on 18 February 1957, when Walter Bolton was hanged at Mount Eden gaol in Auckland for the murder of his wife Beatrice.

Bolton was executed in 1957.

On 15 April 1997, fifty years after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball in 1957, his number 42 was retired throughout the league. No new player from that day forward would ever wear jersey number 42. The idea to retire 42 was former National League president Len Coleman’s. Ultimately, it was Commissioner Bud Selig’s decision to make.

That season, 14 players had jersey number 42. They were allowed to keep the number if they wore it in honor of Robinson. Those players were:

Dennis Cook
Tom Goodwin
Buddy Groom
Fernando Hernandez
Butch Huskey
Mike Jackson
Scott Karl
José Lima
Mariano Rivera
Kirk Rueter
Marc Sagmoen
Jason Schmidt
Mo Vaughn
Lenny Webster

Mo Vaughn (Red Sox, Angels, and Mets), Mike Jackson (Indians and Twins), and José Lima (Astros and Tigers) were the last players to wear jersey number 42 with two or more teams.

Mariano Rivera was the last player to have jersey number 42 assigned to him in Major League Baseball. Rivera started in the MLB in 1995 and he retired after the 2013 season.

About Schmidt, a 2002 American film starring Jack Nicholson, is one of only few films to include a character who is an actuary.
