Henry Rollins’ birth name is Henry Garfield. He adopted the stage surname of Rollins after Sonny Rollins, the jazz saxophonist.
James A. Garfield was President for less than a year. His predecessor was Rutherford B. Hayes, and he was succeeded (after his assassination) by Chester Arthur, all in 1881. The only other year with three U.S. Presidents was exactly forty years earlier, in 1841, when Martin Van Buren, William Henry Harrison (who died of illness, perhaps pneumonia, after delivering a very long inaugural address in the rain) and John Tyler all served.
Martin Van Buren was the first President to have been born a US citizen, and the first not of British ancestry. He and Thomas Jefferson are the only men to have served as Sec. of War, VP, and President. He and Teddy Roosevelt both ran for President on third-party tickets after leaving the office.
The 1958 Notting Hill riots pitted London’s white “Teddy Boy” gangs against black immigrants from Jamaica.
A stone monument on the Palisadoes near Port Royal, Jamaica records that “the first coconut tree was planted March 4, 1869 by John Norton Esquire Superintendent of the General Penitentiary”. Within 20 years 20,000 trees had been planted and flourished for a while, an ambitious project aimed at covering the Palisadoes in Coconut trees. Eventually disease destroyed them leaving only the stone monument.
Following his disastrous voyage to Tahiti on HMS Bounty, and his historic voyage in the open boat in which he was left by the mutineers, Captain William Bligh made a second, this time successful, voyage that brought breadfruit trees to Jamaica and the rest of the West Indies. He was entombed in the family plot behind the church which is now the Museum of Garden History in Lambeth, London, with a plaque commemorating his service to horticulture, and a model of a breadfruit on top.
After the Bounty mutiny, Bligh (who was exonerated) continued his naval career. In 1797, sailors under his command once again mutinied (The Spithead Mutiny). Bligh was later named the governor of the colony of New South Wales in Australia. The settlers mutinied against him there, too (the Rum Rebellion).

The 1988 film Space Mutiny was a feature on “Mystery Science Theater 3000”. Although it was a South African production, it was misidentified as Canadian in Mike’s and the robots’ commentary. They did, however, accurately observe, in detail, the impressive number of instances of cast members falling over railings on the spaceship, whose crew had been plotting to sell the passengers into slavery.
I think you mean SecState, not SecWar.
The 22nd and current Canadian prime minister is Stephen Harper, leader of the Conservative Party. He was born in Toronto, Ontario but rose to political power in Alberta.
[del]The word mutiny comes from the Italian city Modena, or in ancient Latin Mutina, which was where the slave and gladiator revolt led by Spartacus began. Spartacus has been played in film depictions by Kirk Douglas, Goran Visnijc, and currently Andy Whitfield.[/del]
Blues great Alberta Hunter, a contemporary of Bessie Smith (believed by some to have been her lover- Hunter was openly bisexual) left show business at the age of 60 to become a nurse. By lying about her age she worked as a nurse for more than 20 years (she was forced into mandatory retirement at ‘65’ but was in fact in her 80s). At 83 she began performing again due to boredom and became bigger than she’d ever been. Her story is told on stage in the musical Cooking at the Cookery (a two actress show that spans more than 75 years of her life).
[del]Alberta Hunter, a blues singer and songwriter once considered the equal of Ethel Waters and Bessie Smith, abruptly left singing and became a nurse in her fifties. She was rediscovered and returned to performing in her eighties.[/del]
The Russian footie club FC Spartak Moscow is named for the former Soviet Spartak Sports Club, which commemorates Spartacus and his multi-ethnic proletarian revolt against the capitalist oppressors. They sponsored the Spartakiad games, for athletes from the entire Communist bloc.
Alberta Hunter never performed in the Spartakiad games.
(pretty weak, but it gets the game back on track)
On one famous episode of “Cheers”, Cliff Clavin’s response on “Final Jeopardy” was “Who are three people who have never been in my kitchen?”
BTW, cheers, sternvogel.
John Ratzenberger, who played Cliff Clavin on Cheers, is a conservative Republican who has supported GOP candidates around the country with public appearances. He has also provided a character voice in virtually every Pixar movie.
John Ratzenberger auditioned for the role of Norm on Cheers, but after sensing he wasn’t going to get the part, suggested to producer James Burrows that every bar needs a resident know-it-all. To his surprise, Burrows took him up on the idea.
