The name “heavy metal” is taken from the lyrics of Steppenwolf’s “Born to the Wild”:
I like smoke and lightning / Heavy metal thunder / Racin’ with the wind / And the feelin’ that I’m under
Heavy metal album Appetite for Destruction, the debut album for Guns N’ Roses, has sold 28 millions copies worldwide.
The palatial triplex on the Upper East Side that Joan Rivers called home for more than a quarter of a century until her death last year — where she had honed her caustic comedy routines, entertained celebrities, and, by her own telling, even encountered a belligerent ghost — sold for $28 million and was the most expensive closed sale of the week, according to city records.
The property, a penthouse with an adjoining unit, No. 5A, which was occupied by her daughter, Melissa Rivers, and grandson, Edgar Cooper Endicott, is at 1 East 62nd Street, off Fifth Avenue. The buyer was “Middle Eastern royalty” who paid the full asking price, according to a spokeswoman for the listing broker, the Corcoran Group.
At 34’ X 76’, the Great Hall in Marymount Manhattan College, which is in New York’s Upper East Side of Manhattan, is one of New York City’s largest dance studios.
There have been seven U.S. Navy warships named USS New York, but only one, a Los Angeles-class nuclear fast attack submarine decommissioned in 1997, named USS New York City.
The first nuclear-powered submarine, the USN “Nautilus,” sailed in 1955. Today, with equipment that extracts oxygen from sea water acting together with nuclear power, submarines can say underwater for as long as their water, food and other supplies last.
The USS *Housatonic *was a screw sloop-of-war of the United States Navy. Named for the Housatonic River of New England, Housatonic was the first ship to be sunk by a submarine.
Housatonic was launched on 20 November 1861, by the Boston Navy Yard at Charlestown, Massachusetts, and commissioned there on 29 August 1862, with Commander William Rogers Taylor in command. Housatonic was one of four sister ships which included USS Adirondack, USS Ossipee, and USS Juniata.
The ship was sunk on 17 February 1864 by a spar torpedo from the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley, which also sunk with all hands.
Two other US NAvy ships have carried the name Housatonic, but none are currently in service with the US Navy.
Capt. James T. Kirk’s USS Enterprise was a Constitution-class starship; Jean-Luc Picard’s USS Enterprise, NCC-1701-D, was of the Galaxy class, while his NCC-1701-E was a Sovereign-class ship.
212 years from now, on March 22, James Tiberius Kirk will be born in Riverside, Iowa. You can visit a marker there today: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b0/Future_Birthplace_of_Captain_James_T_Kirk.jpg.
212 is the area code for Manhattan in New York City, along with 646 and the overlay area code of 917. Before population growth forced an expansion of available area codes in September 1984, 212 was used in all parts of New York City. 212 is still, in some circles, considered a more prestigious area code than the others.
The Hotel Pennsylvania in Midtown Manhattan claims it is the oldest continuously-used telephone number in New York City. Its number, PEnnsylvania 6-5000 or 212 PE6-5000, appears in a 1940 Glenn Miller Orchestra song title, meaning it predates the 1947 creation of the original North American area codes.
The Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, fought between 1-3 July 1863, has often been protrayed as starting due to a Confederate Division commander (Harry Heth) trying to obtain shoes for his foot-worn infantry. However, it was the ten roads that led into town are what brought the armies to Gettysburg. The town only had 2,000 people living there at the time of the battle and no shoe factory or warehouse.
Epitrochoid describes the shape of the spinning rotor in the modern Felix Wankel rotary engine. The first working prototype ran on 01 February 1957.
Here is a GIF of the epitrochoid rotor in blue) spinning in a rotary engine:
Gettysburg PA sits almost directly in the middle of the epitrochoid-like shape formed by the interstate highways connecting the three vertex cities of Harrisburg PA at the North vertex, Baltimore MD at the Southeast vertex, and Hagerstown MD at the West vertex: Google Maps.
The town of Intercourse, Pennsylvania originally named Cross Keys, after a local tavern. Intercourse became the name in 1814, based either on two famous roads that crossed here. The Old King’s highway from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh (now the Old Philadelphia Pike) ran east and west through the center of the town. The road from Wilmington to Erie intersected in the middle. The joining of these two roads is claimed by some to be the basis for the town ‘Cross Keys’ or eventually ‘Intercourse’ or maybe from the use of the word ‘intercourse’ to describe the ‘fellowship’ and ‘social interaction and support.’
The longest stone arch bridge in the world is the Rockville Bridge in Harrisburg PA. It was completed in 1902 and is 1.16 miles long. It is currently a rail bridge used by Norfolk Southern Railway and Amtrak.
ETA: ninja’d, but my play still works because Blue Balls, Intercourse and Paradise are all in Pennsylvania.
The Hotel Pennsylvania, claims to have the oldest continuing telephone number in New York City : PEnnsylvania 6-5000. The named Pennsylvania exchange served the area around Penn Station in New York. The two letters, PE, stand for the numbers 7 and 3, making the phone number 736-5000, not including the +1-212 area code for Manhattan. while the hotel opened in 1919, the exact age of the telephone number and the veracity of the hotel’s claim are unknown.

The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) is an integrated telephone numbering plan serving 20 North American countries that share its resources. These countries include the United States and its territories, Canada, Bermuda, Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, Sint Maarten, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Turks & Caicos.

The Turks and Caicos Islands consist of 40 islands and cays, eight of which are inhabited. The islands are located 550 miles southeast of Miami, Florida, just below the Bahamas chain and just to the east of Cuba and the island of Hispaniola (Dominican Republic and Haiti.) Technically, the Turks and Caicos are located in the Atlantic Ocean, not the Caribbean Sea. The Turks & Caicos Islands are a British Crown Colony. A Governor is appointed by the Queen and presides over an Executive Council formed by an elected local self-government. Government offices are located in Grand Turk, with branches on other Islands as needed. The legal system is based on English Common Law. The islands are home to roughly 30,000 full time residents, and welcome more than 200,000 tourist annually.
