Chicago lawyer and novelist Scott Turow was appointed by the Governor of Illinois to a commission to review the state’s death penalty. Previously a self-described “death penalty agnostic,” he came to oppose capital punishment and support, instead, a maximum punishment of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Turow explains his reasoning in his nonfiction book Ultimate Punishment.
