Trivia Dominoes: Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

The administrator had determined that, for accuracy, I have to repost, to say “In the '50’s, only one state capital was represented by a MLB or NFL team”.

Of the US state capital cities:

Juneau AK is the largest by land area: 2,700 sq. mi.
Phoenix AZ is the largest by population: 1.4M people
Denver CO is the highest by elevation: 5,280’
Atlanta GA has the largest metro area population: 5.2M people
Trenton NJ also served as the nation’s capital: 1784
Santa Fe NM is the longest p-serving capital city: since 1610 (founded by Spanish colonists)
Montpelier VT is the least-populated: 7,855 people

(Santa Fe is higher than Denver, at 7,200 feet.)

In play:

The last two state capitals to be added to the US are the only two that end with the letter U: Juneau and Honolulu.

Playing off post 28,198:

The national capital of Canada, (Ottawa) and two provincial capitals (Fredericton, New Brunswick and Victoria, British Columbia) were chosen for defensive reasons, as they were located far enough away from the US not to be vulnerable to lightning attacks.

Victoria is the only city name that occurs in Canada, the US and Mexico. Only the one in Canada is named for the queen. Victoria, Texas and Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, were named for Guadalupe Victoria, the first president of Mexico.

Queen Victoria’s son, the future King Edward VII, had a number of lovers, including Winston Churchill’s mother, Lady Randolph Churchill, the former Jennie Jerome.

Queen Victoria’s second son, Alfred Duke of Edinburgh, eventually succeeded to the position of Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, via his fathet’s claim.

His son and successor, Charles Edward, inherited the Saxe-Coburg and Gotha title, but forfeited his English titles during WWI for participating in the side of the German Empire.

Charles Edward also became a Nazi supporter in WWII.

Robert Preston’s last movie was The Last Starfighter (1984), and his second-to-last movie was Victor Victoria (1982).

The Victor Talking Machine Company was formed in 1901 by Eldridge R. Johnson, who made gramophones, and Emile Berliner, who made the recordings, in oder to avoid legal wrangling over patents. The name Victor was retained with the formation of a new company, RCA, when they bought Victor 1n 1929…

King Victor was a mysterious figure in Agatha Christie’s novel, “The Secret of Chimneys.”

The letter V is Victor in the NATO Phonetic Alphabet: Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel, India, Juliett, Kilo, Lima, Mike, November, Oscar, Papa, Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango, Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, X-ray, Yankee, Zulu.

Tango and Foxtrot are words that are barely a century old, both appearing first in the USA in about 1914. The Foxtrot is a dance that originated in the USA, but it took the Tango 20 years to spread out of the working-class immigrant slums of Buenos Airea. The Tango was originally a musical genre, and the standardization of the dance steps evolved over decades.

The foxtrot dance premiered in 1914 in the USA and reached its height in popularity in the 1930s. The exact origin of the dance’s name is unclear, although one theory is that it took its name from its popularizer, the vaudeville actor Harry Fox.

One of the most significant national parks in Africa is the W National Park, administered jointly by Niger, Benin and Burkina Faso. It is so named after the letter W, suggested by a double bend in the Niger River at the location of the park.

The caracal is a medium-sized wild cat around one meter long. It is sometimes called the desert lynx, African lynx or Persian lynx, but it is not a member of the Lynx genus. The cat’s name comes from the Turkish word “karakulak”, which means “black ear”.

W National Park is known for large mammals, including the caracal.
