Sandy is a mature dog when he suddenly reappears in a May 1925 strip to rescue Annie from gypsy kidnappers. Annie and Sandy remain together thereafter.

The term “Gypsy” is an exonym, which means it is a term that used only outside the referenced place or culture, but not within it. Another example of an exonym would be ‘Frisco’, a term for San Francisco that is never used by people who live there, but only by outsiders. Exonyms are often standard within non-native languages, such as the English word “Germany”, distinct from the endonym “Deutschland”.
