The Labatt beer company introduced 50 Ale in 1950 to celebrate 50 years in the brewing business in Canada. “Fifty” or “Cinquante” was the best selling beer in Canada for several years, until surpassed by Labatt Blue, a lager.
The oldest continuously operating brewery in the world, since 1040, is Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan about 25 miles north of Munich
The Munchkins from the Wizard of Oz were inspired by the Münchner Kindl (Munich Child) a figure depicted in the coat of arms for the city of Munich. This figure has been the coat-of-arms of Munich since the 13th century. The figure portrayed was originally a monk (or friar) holding a book, but by the 16th century it evolved in different portrayals into the figure of a small child wearing a pointed hood, often shown holding a beer mug and a radish.
Not in play.
My reply was in response to the word “governor” in the previous post.

The signature BMW ‘double kidney’ front grill first debuted in 1933 on the BMW 03.

The evolution of the grill can be seen between the two image links.

In 1951, the original round charcoal kettle grill was built by George Stephen Sr., a then part-owner of the sheet metal shop in Chicago. Because the grill became so successful after he began selling it in 1952, Stephen formed the barbecue division of the Weber Brothers factory. In the late 1950s, Stephen bought out the Weber Brothers factory and became the sole owner, devoting all his professional time to manufacturing and selling the Weber grill.
Bestselling American horror and thriller author Stephen King wrote in Danse Macabre that he remembers as a child that his bibliophile mother often gave him books she thought he might like, sometimes saying, “This is trash… but it’s good trash.”
Weber Brothers Metal Works was incorporated in 1893. The grill we know as The Weber Grill was originally made in 1951 using two sheet metal half-spheres normally used as parts of buoys built in one of their metal shops in Chicago by employee and part owner George Stephen. Stephen called it George’s Barbecue Kettle.
Edit: was ninja’d but it still works – Stephen.
Stephen King famously despised the film version of* The Shining* and so personally sanctioned a miniseries remake starring Steven Weber. It received good reviews but, compared to the movie, is pretty much forgotten. King had a cameo as the lead singer of the Gage Creed Combo, a band at a hotel function; the band’s name is a nod to the ill fated child in his Pet Semetary.
The opening scene of The Shining shows Jack Nicholson’s character driving his VW Beetle to The Outlook Hotel, where he gets the job as winter offseason caretaker and eventually moves his family in. Those opening scenes were filmed on the scenic Going-To-The-Sun Rd in NW Montana, in Glacier National Park. The outdoor hotel scenes were filmed at the Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood Oregon.
Comment: the Going-To-The-Sun Rd and Glacier are on my bucket list.
East Glacier Park is a seasonal station stop for Amtrak’s Chicago-to-Seattle/Portland train The Empire Builder in Montana. The station is served daily from April to October, and caters mostly to tourists visiting Glacier National Park. The historic Glacier Park Hotel (aka Glacier Park Lodge), built in 1913 by the Great Northern Railroad, is within a block’s distance from the station.
Portland stone, famous for its use in British and world architecture, including St Paul’s Cathedral and the United Nations Headquarters, is still quarried on the Isle of Portland, off the coast of Dorset in England.
Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer were married at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London in 1981. Years earlier, a block of stone from the cathedral was donated to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and is still prominently displayed there.
The Acts of Paul and Thecla was a late 2nd century apocryphal tale of a young virgin who followed St. Paul, though he repeatedly refused to baptize her. She got into danger many times and God rescued her with miracles including fire from heaven, making wild animals in an arena lay down at her feet, and causing a cave to collapse on men who attempted to rape her. Per the legend she lived to be extremely old and was known as a healer and when she died she was laid to rest with Paul in Rome.
The Acts of the Apostles begins with Jesus’ ascension into heaven and ends with St. Paul in jail awaiting trial.

Ascension Parish, Louisiana, lies on both sides of the Mississippi River.
Robert Parish, nicknamed the “Chief”, was an NBA center with the Golden State Warriors, Boston Celtics, Charlotte Hornets and Chicago Bulls. He won 3 NBA championships with the Celtics, and one with the Bulls in his final season at the age of 43. To date, Parish is still the oldest player to have ever won an NBA championship.
Serb Darko Milicic is the youngest player ever to win an NBA championship (at 18 years 356 days with the 2003-2004 Detroit Pistons).
A jouneyman’s journeyman (6 teams 6ppg) Milicic was one of the worst draft picks in NBA history, being taken 2nd in the 2003 first round, ahead of certain Hall of Famers Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, and Dwayne Wade.
Serbia was once the dominant state within Yugoslavia, a republic formed in 1929 to forcibly unify the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. The republic was held together by coercion – first under kings and then later under a Communist government, until 1991-92 when Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina declared independence. By 1992, all that was left of Yugoslavia was Serbia and Montenegro.
