Trivia Dominoes: Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

Sequoyah was a member of the Cherokee tribe who compiled the first Cherokee syllabary, making reading and writing in Cherokee possible. This was one of the very few times in recorded history that a member of a pre-literate people independently created an effective writing system. After seeing its worth, the people of the Cherokee Nation rapidly began to use his syllabary and officially adopted it in 1825. Their literacy rate quickly surpassed that of surrounding European-American settlers.

Okay I will play off of nm, New Mexico.

Shiprock, in northwestern New Mexico, is a city on Navajo reservation land. Its Navajo language name is Naatʼáanii Nééz. It is named after the nearby Shiprock rock formation, in Navajo it is Tsé Bitʼaʼí, “rock with wings” or “winged rock”. The rock rises nearly 1,600 feet, and is a monadnock. A monadnock or inselberg is an isolated rock hill, knob, ridge, or small mountain that rises abruptly from a gently sloping or virtually level surrounding plain.

I was there last week. Interesting lands, and there are many beautiful sights in the Four Corners region.

Edit – Ninja’d, but my play still works: Cherokee, and Navajo.

Cherokee Nation v. Georgia was a United States Supreme Court case. The Cherokee Nation sought a federal injunction against laws passed by the state of Georgia depriving them of rights within its boundaries.

The Court did not hear the case on its merits, ruling that it had no original jurisdiction in the matter. Chief Justice John Marshall called the Cherokee a dependent nation, with a relationship to the United States like that of a “ward to its guardian.” Justice William Johnson added that the “rules of nations” would regard “Indian tribes” as “nothing more than wandering hordes, held together only by ties of blood and habit, and having neither rules or government beyond what is required in a savage state.”

The Cherokee were later removed to reservation lands in “Indian Territory” in Oklahoma.

Ninja’d but still works with “reservation”

Dammit, ninja’ed

The Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) is the U.S. government’s civilian rocketry and spacecraft propulsion research center. MSFC’s first mission was developing the Saturn launch vehicles for the Apollo moon program, and it worked on the Space Shuttle’s propulsion system and on some of the Internation Space Station modules. MSFC is named in honor of General of the Army George Marshall.

General George C. Marshall was born in Uniontown PA. In his life he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the Silver Star, and the Distinguished Service Medal. He is interred at Arlington National Cemetery. Orson Welles said in an interview with Dick Cavett that George “Marshall is the greatest man I ever met… I think he was the greatest human being who was also a great man… He was a tremendous gentleman, an old fashioned institution which isn’t with us anymore.”

The Marshall Plan, named after General and Secretary of State George Marshall, was an American initiative to aid Western Europe, giving billions in in economic support to help rebuild Western European economies after the end of World War II. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953 for the plan.

The USSR developed its own economic plan, known as the Molotov Plan.

Ed Wood’s “Plan 9 from Outer Space” is widely held to be the worst movie ever made in the Sci-Fi genre. But aficionados of such cult classics regard it as one of the best.

Actress Cynthia Wood was in only a few films. Two of (minor) note are as a beauty shop customer in Shampoo (1975), and as the Playmate of the Year character in Apocalypse Now (1979). She clearly got her most exposure in the real magazine, Playboy Magazine’s 1974 Playmate of the Year.

Playboy magazine no longer runs pictures of entirely-naked women.

The first issue of Playboy magazine was December 1953 and featured a centerfold of Marilyn Monroe. A picture of it can be seen on this Wikipedia page:

Norma Jean Baker took her mother Gladys’s maiden name Monroe as her film name. Her mother claimed to be a direct descendant of James Monroe, but this is demonstrably false (none of Monroe’s grandchildren were named Monroe since only his daughters survived to adulthood) and no link has been found by any genealogist to date.

Although Andrew Jackson served as a courier in a militia unit at age thirteen, James Monroe is regarded as the last US President who was a Revolutionary War veteran, since he served as an officer of the Continental Army and took part in combat.

Viagra helps men get and maintain an erection.

Tests on lab hamsters showed that Viagra may help people overcome jet lag faster. A study has shown that Viagra helped the hamsters reset circadian rhythms faster measuring their recovery by how quickly they hopped back onto their exercise wheels.

A “lag putt” is a term used in golf for a long putt which, because of its length, the golfer does not expect to make but hopes to get close to the cup. The golfer wants to make sure they are left with a short, manageable second putt that they shouldn’t miss. A good lag putt positions the golfer to have a simple and easily makeable follow-up putt.

In the early 1770s, the first African golf course was built on Bunce Island, in Sierra Leone, by British slave traders.

The flag of Sierra Leone is horizontal stripes of green, white and blue (from top to bottom). The country’s motto is similarly tripartite: “Unity, Freedom, Justice.”

The flag of Ireland is green, white, and orange to represent Catholics (green) and Protestants (orange) with a truce (white) between them. The association of the color orange with Irish Protestants involves the House of Orange-Nassau and the similarity of their name (which is Celtic in origin) and the Sanskrit word for the fruit.
