Trivia Dominoes: Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham (Dame Maggie Smith) in “Downton Abbey”, when first hearing the word, asked “What is a weekend?”

In addition to Charlie Bucket, the other four children who found Golden Tickets and were allowed into Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory were Augustus Gloop (fat boy who fell into the chocolate river), Veruca Salt (spoiled rich girl who fell into the garbage pit), Violet Beauregard (gum chewer who chewed the three course dinner gum, ending with the blueberry pie that turned her into a huge blueberry) and Mike Teavee (TV addict who went through the magic TV, ended up very small and was later stretched into 7 feet tall).

The Golden State Warriors lost their first home game of the season last night to the visiting Boston Celtics. Poetic justice there, because the 1985-1986 Boston Celtics hold the NBA season record for best home game record, 40-1. The Warriors were going for 41-0 this season (well, the fans, really, they (we!) were the ones who really wanted the record), but now the Warriors can only at best tie that record this season.

GO WARRIORS!!!

Larry Bird played his entire professional basketball career for the Boston Celtics, winning three NBA championships and two NBA Finals MVP awards. The Bird was alsoa 12-time NBA All-Star and was named the league’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) three consecutive times (1984–1986).

“Surfin’ Bird” is a song performed by the American surf rock band The Trashmen, and it is also the name of the album that featured this hit single. It was released in 1963 and reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. It is a combination of two R&B hits by The Rivingtons: “Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow” and “The Bird’s the Word”.

Larry Bird played his entire career with the Celtics, yes, but when he got into management he came back home to French Lick to the Indiana Pacers.

A person accused of a criminal offence in Canada has the right to a trial in either English or French. The judge, court clerk and Crown prosecutor must all use the language of the accused’s choice.

The Gilbert and Sullivan one-act comic opera Trial By Jury concerns a “breach of promise of marriage” lawsuit in which the judge and legal system are the objects of lighthearted satire.

Some bible quotes related to marriage include…

Genesis 2:22-24
*22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[a] he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

23 The man said,

“This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.”
24 That is why a man leaves

Proverbs 5:18-19
*18 May your fountain be blessed,
and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.
19 A loving doe, a graceful deer—
may her breasts satisfy you always,
may you ever be intoxicated with her love.
*

Proverbs 18:22
*22 He who finds a wife finds what is good
and receives favor from the Lord.
*

Proverbs 31:10
*A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.
*

Ephesians 5:22-33
*22 Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing[a] her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28 In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church— 30 for we are members of his body. 31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”** 32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. 33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

ETA - Comment: people struggle how to interpret and apply these, and that is understandable.

The species of deer common in ancient Israel and mentioned in the Bible, the Persian fallow deer and the roe deer, were locally extinct in the past century and have recently been reintroduced to present day Israel by animal conservation projects.

The Unicorn, mentioned several times in the Bible, has so far evaded efforts to capture and reintroduce it.

How interesting and I’d never encountered that before in what I’ve read - limited reading though it may be.

The word ‘unicorn’ or ‘unicorns’ appear several times in the bible, all so far as I’ve found, only in the O.T. —

Numbers 23:22
Numbers 24:8
Deuteronomy 33:17
Job 39:9-10
Salm 22:21
Psalm 29:6
Psalm 92:10
and Isaiah 34:7 (not necessarily a comprehensive list)

In the KJV translation the unicorn word is used, and also in the RSV and NIV translations, ‘wild ox(en)’ is used in every instance above.

It is my understanding (no cite) that the RSV, Revised Standard Version, in general is a more accurate translation of the old Greek, at least in the English language of today. That applies to the O.T. and not to the N.T.

The KJV was first published in 1611. The NKJV (New) was published in 1989. NKJV do s not have unicorn(s), it has wild ox(en) like RSV and NIV do.

John Entwistle, bassist for The Who, was nicknamed “The Ox.”

Bud Abbott and Lou Costello’s Who’s On First? routine fielded an infield having

P: TOMORROW
C: TODAY
1B: WHO
2B: WHAT
3B: I DON’T KNOW
SS: I DON’T GIVE A DARN

In the outfield the players were:
LF: WHY
CF: BECAUSE
RF: (RF was never identified; however in the Selchow and Righter board game, RF was named NOBODY

Note: at some point during the skit, Costello thought the First Baseman’s name was NATURALLY, but this was simply a misunderstanding. Naturally.

On September 23, 2007, Taiwan-born Dodger shortstop Chin-Lung Hu lined a single to right field off Padre pitcher Bob Wickman, and for the first time in MLB history, Hu was on first. It was not Hu’s first game, nor even his first hit. He had previously hit a home run, and did not stop at first base. The fist time on first for Hu in professional bseball would have been in 2003, playing at Ogden, Utah.

Albert Bailey “Allie” Watt was a Major League Baseball player who played in 1920 with the Washington Senators.

With a double in his only turn at-bat in 1920, Watt is one of the rare Major Leaguers with a career batting average of 1.000. Watt was also a second baseman.

So while in Ogden UT in 2003, Hu was on first, back in 1920 in Washington, D.C., we had Watt on second.

Yankee infielder Jim Mason has a lifetime post-season slugging percentage of 4.000, which is unbeatable. He homered in game four in the 1976 World Series against Cincinnati, in his only post-season plate appearance.

Pitcher Brandon Morrow has so far pitched for the Mariners, Blue Jays and Padres in his 9 years career. So while his last name is MORROW and not TOMORROW, it’s pretty close.

Nick Noonan is a third baseman in the SF Giants organization. His last name isn’t I DON’T KNOW, heck it’s not really that close, but so be it.

Al Todd played in the 1930s as a catcher. Not TODAY, but TODD.

Chase d’Arnaud currently plays in the Braves organization. He is a shortstop. I DON’T GIVE A DARN, and D’ARNAUD. Work with me, please.

So far we have found a:

Hu on first (Who),
Watt on second (What),
Noonan on third (I Don’t Know),
d’Arnaud at shortstop (I Don’t Give A Darn),
Morrow as pitcher (Tomorrow), and a
Todd as catcher (Today).

That’s starting to stretch things a little.

Abbott and Costello and their “Who’s On First” routine are prominently featured on the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.

According to the Hall of Fame FAQs,
“We often hear baseball fans ask the following trivia question: “Who are the only members of the Hall of Fame that have nothing to do with baseball?” The supposed answer is “Bud Abbott and Lou Costello.” Actually, that answer isn’t quite correct. Abbott and Costello are not members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, though the comedy duo is featured in our museum.”

On an episode of The Simpsons, Superintendent Chalmers intends to perform “Who’s on First?” with Principal Skinner, but the latter explains the joke to the audience before they start, incurring the wrath of his boss.
