The “wishbone formation” in American football consists of the quarterback under center, a fullback directly behind the quarterback, and two halfbacks behind, and to either side of, the fullback (thus forming a “Y”, or wishbone, shape). The wishbone was commonly used in college football during the 1970s and 1980s.
