Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Mexico, is not a port (puerto). It is an inland city named after Felipe Carrillo Puerto, a former Governor of Yucatán who was assassinated in 1924. Carrillo, as it is locally known, is a hotspot for birdwatching, located near an easily accessible habitat famous for it avian variety.
Mexico has had at least two Governors of Yucatán assassinated. Besides Felipe Carrillo Puerto in 1924, Carlos Loret de Mola Mediz, a former Governor of Yucatán, was assassinated in 1986.
At least one other Mexican governor was assassinated. Abraham González, Governor of Chihuahua, was assassinated in 1913.
Oxkutzcab, a city in Yucatan, despite its eye-chart-looking name, seems a more efficient way of saying “Place of ramon, tobacco, and honey”. The city pre-dates the Spanish conquest, and is built in the site of the Mayan city that preceded it.
Leo Carrillo, better known as Pancho, The Cisco Kid’s sidekick and a man of Castilian Spanish ancestry, served on California’s Beach & Parks commission and was instrumental in the acquisition of San Simeon from the estate of William Randolph Hearst. A state beach in Santa Monica, CA is named after him.
