In the first game of the 1954 World Series, Willie Mays made a long run, followed by an over-the-shoulder catch near the deep centerfield fence, whirled and hurled the ball, holding the runner at 2nd to the gain of a single base. The N.Y. Giants went on to win the game by one run.
Actually, the Giants won the game by three runs, decided by a three run homer by Dusty Rhodes, pinch hittng for Monte Irvin. The Giants also won the second game by two runs, decided by a 2-run pinch home run by Dusty Rhodes bating for Monte Irvin. Giants went on to sweep all four games. But Game 1 went extra innings, so the Giants would have lost without Mays catch of Vic Wertz’ drive.
Pro wrestler Virgil Riley Runnels Jr. billed himself as “Dusty Rhodes” and “The American Dream”, using a persona as an ordinary hard-working blue-collar guy. Rhodes split his two WWWF title matches with Superstar Billy Graham, and later theatrically switched allegiances to the New World Order.
Aldous Huxley’s trip to the United States in 1930 gave his novel Brave New World much of its character. Huxley was outraged by the culture of youth, commercial cheeriness and sexual promiscuity. He had also found the book My Life and Work by Henry Ford on the boat to America, and he saw the book’s principles applied in much he encountered. There was a fear of Americanization in Europe; by seeing America first hand, and reading the ideas and plans of one of its most influential industrialists, Huxley was spurred to write Brave New World with America in mind.
The “feelies” are his response to the “talkie” motion pictures, and the sex-hormone chewing gum is a parody of the ubiquitous chewing gum, which was something of a symbol of America at that time.
Dubble Bubble is a brand of pink-colored bubblegum invented by Walter Diemer, an accountant at the Philadelphia based Fleer Chewing Gum Company. In 1928, he made a 300 pound batch of what would become Dubble Bubble. However, the only food coloring available at the factory was pink, so Diemer had no choice but to use it, and the color would go on to become the standard for gum for the world over.
Bismuth subsalicylate, a.k.a. pink bismuth, is sold as Pepto-Bismol. Pepto-Bismol is pink because the bismuth subsalicylate is pink.
Alecia Beth Moore, known professionally as Pink (stylized as P!nk), is an American singer, songwriter, dancer and actress. She was born on September 8, 1979, in Doylestown, Pa., and once described herself “Irish-German-Lithuanian-Jew.”
“Think Pink” is the opening number of the musical film *Funny Face *, starring Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn.
Although Ginger Rogers is most famous as Fred Astaire’s dancing partner, Mr. Astaire always insisted his favorite partner was Rita Hayworth.
Fred Astaire paid tribute to dance partner Cyd Charisse in his autobiography, calling her “beautiful dynamite” and writing: “That Cyd! When you’ve danced with her you stay danced with.”
Fred Harmon was a co-owner of the Golden State Warriors under previous ownership from July 2004 to November 2010. The 2016 Golden State Warriors were (are!) only the tenth team to ever come back from a 1-3 game playoff deficit. The Warriors just ousted the Oklahoma City Thunder after being down 1-3.
***GO WARRIORS!!!
and GO SHARKS!!!***
When Leonard Bernstein hired the then unknown Stephen Sondheim to pen lyrics for his Shark and Jet gang show West Side Story, he only gave him a contract for the absolute minimum payments, with no thoughts of future royalties. He would later apologize to Sondheim, who would say “My name is on the marquee with yours on a hit musical. That’s all the payment I need.”
Jetblue is the 5th largest airline in the United States. As of 2016, the airline is one of only two airlines in the United States with a four-star rating from Skytrax. It also is fairly unique in not flying any Boeing aircraft, using to date only Airbus (Europe) and Embraer (Brazil) jets.
The Airbus A380 is the world’s largest passenger airliner. Called a “super jumbo” jet, the A380 is a double-deck, wide-body, four-engine jet airliner. The A380 can carry up to 853 passengers if in an all-economy class configuration. By comparison, the Boeing 747-400 up to 600 passengers if in an all-economy class configuration.
The A380 is flown by 13 airlines:
Singapore Airlines
Emirates
Qantas
Air France
Lufthansa
Korean Air
China Southern Airlines
Malaysia Airlines
Thai Airways International (THAI)
British Airways
Asiana Airlines
Qatar Airways
Etihad Airways
There are two words in the above post beginning with the letter Q, with neither of them followed by a U. There is a third major international airline with a Q in its name not followed by a U – Iraqi Airlines.
The only letters that do not begin a common English three letter word that ends in “T” are I, Q, and U.
The only unhyphenated word in the English language with three consecutive pairs of letters is “bookkeeper”.
Another 10 letter English word with only 4 different letters is tattletale.
Bullitt: i’ve flown on a Qantas A380, LAX-Sydney and Sydney-DFW. Just like any other flight, but landings watched from the top deck are…different.
