In Animal House, Larry Kroger and Kent Dorfmann got the message that they weren’t wanted at the Omega fraternity when they kept getting seated next to fellow nerds Clayton, Sidney, Jugdish and Muhammad.
Muhammad Ali holds the record for shortest poem ever written: “Me? Whee!”
Muhammad Ali was born Cassius Clay Jr. on January 17, 1942 in Louisville, Ky.
Hillerich & Bradsby, the manufacturers of the famous Louisville Slugger baseball bats, also manufacture multiple types of other sporting equipment. This includes baseball/softball gloves, golf equipment, and hockey equipment.
Jim Dial, the anchorman on the TV news comedy Murphy Brown, referred to his colleague Murphy by the nickname “Slugger.”
Dial was America’s first deodorant soap.
At one point, the Dial Corporation, makers of Dial soap, also owned the Greyhound bus line.
Greyhound Bus Lines was founded in Hibbing, Minnesota, which has also been the home of Bob Dylan, Manson prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi, Gary Puckett of the Union Gap, Kevin McHale of the Celtics, vintner Robert Mondavi, and US Communist Party leader Gus Hall.
In Back to School, Rodney Dangerfield recited a portion of Dylan Thomas’ poem, “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night,” during his final English exam.
Most of the exterior shots for Back To School were filmed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, standing in for the film’s fictional Grand Lakes University. The building which stood in for Dangerfield’s character’s dormitory was Schlicter Hall…which is, indeed, a dorm, though it is actually a women’s dorm.
Donna Shalala served as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Madison before being named Bill Clinton’s Secretary of Health and Human Services.
The U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare became the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in 1979 when its education functions were split into a new department; the Social Security Administration was removed from the functions of HHS in 1995.
Also in 1979: Patty Hearst was released from prison less than 2 years into a 35 year sentence by order of Jimmy Carter (who commuted her sentence but did not pardon her). She almost immediately married her bodyguard, G. Bernard Shaw (no relation to the writer) with whom she has two daughters, Lydia and Gillian. In 2000 as he was leaving office, Bill Clinton gave her a full pardon.
However, in Warren Zevon’s song “Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner”, on his legendary album “Excitable Boy”, he finishes
“Patty Hearst heard the burst of Roland’s Thompson gun, and bought it.”
So who do you believe? Jimmy Carter or Warren Zevon?
Gerald Ford was the last member of the Warren Commission to die, in 2006. He lived longer than any other U.S. President, dying at the age of 93 years and 165 days.
When the stage musical 42nd Street opened on Broadway, it composer, Harry Warren, was not listed in the advertising.
Warren wrote such classics as “42nd Street,” “We’re In the Money,” “Shuffle Off the Buffalo,” “I Only Have Eyes for You,” “Dames,” and “Lullaby of Broadway.” Warren’s work often showed up in Warner Brothers cartoons, since he wrote for Warners.
But Warren is often overlooked. The best collection of his movie music is titled “Lullabye of Broadway: The Best Of Busby Berkeley At Warner Bros” with his name absent.
Mark Warner, former governor of Virginia, is now the junior U.S. senator from that state. He is no relation to his predecessor as senator, John Warner.
Warner Brothers Pictures was founded by Harry, Albert, Sam, and Jack Warner. They previously had owned a film distribution company based in Pittsburgh.
While brother Sam felt the studio should embrace sound, Harry Warner dismissed the prospect by asking: “Who the hell wants to hear actors talk?” A year or so later, however, Warner Bros. released The Jazz Singer.
The Jazz Singer starred Al Jolson, born Asa Yoel. The biggest star of his day (an act that literally nobody would follow), Jolson was also an egomaniac who named all three of his adopted children children after himself: sons Al, Jr. (after his stage name), Asa, Jr. (after his birth name) and daughter Alicia.
