John Cabot is believed to have discovered the new-found-land in 1496, late in the 15th century, on an expedition commissioned by King Henry VII of England. His traditional landing spot is believed to have been the magnificent Cape Bonavista.
John Cabot was Italian. He was born in Genoa and his name really is Giovanni Caboto. His son, Sebastian Cabot, was also an explorer. The 1960s actor, Sebastian Cabot, is perhaps best known for playing Mr. French the butler in the TV sitcom Family Affair. Family Affair also starred Brian Keith who is a US Marine who served as a rear gunner of a Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber in WWII.
In Quantico VA, at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, only a few aircraft are displayed suspended from the ceiling. One of them is a Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber.
Admission to the museum is free, and the museum is open year-round except only Christmas day when it is closed.
The Dauntless of the Galactic Patrol was a super-dreadnought of tremendous power, often used by Grey Lensman Kimball Kinnison.
It is not known if Qadgop the Mercotan was ever slithering on the hull of the Dauntless.
SBD, in Douglas SBD Dauntless, stands for Scout, Bomber, Douglas. SBDs saw their first action in WWII at Pearl Harbor. The SBD’s most important contribution to the American war effort came during the Battle of Midway in early June 1942. Four squadrons of Navy SBD dive bombers attacked and sank or fatally damaged all four Japanese fleet carriers present—three of them in the span of just six minutes (Akagi, Kaga, Sōryū and, later in the day, Hiryū).
Midway Atoll is a 2.4-square-mile atoll in the North Pacific Ocean. The Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, encompassing 590,991.50 acres of land and water (mostly water) is administered by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. Approximately 40 to 60 members of the Service live on the Atoll.
Chicago’s Midway Airport was not named for the famous amusements area of the Columbian Exposition, whose name became an eponym, but for the American victory at Midway Island. Its other main airport was named for Medal of Honor recipient Butch O’Hare, the first US Navy fighter ace in WW2 and son of Al Capone’s lawyer Eddie O’Hare. Eddie eventually broke with Capone, helped federal prosecutors, and got assassinated.
That’s what Le Batard *means *in Norman French. IOW no problem.
Norman Thomas, a Presbyterian minister and a six-time Socialist candidate for president, was one of the most outspoken American advocates for causes now taken for granted.
Thomas was one of the few public figures to oppose President Franklin Roosevelt’s internment of Japanese Americans following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Thomas accused the ACLU of “dereliction of duty” when the organization supported the internment. Thomas also campaigned against racial segregation, environmental depletion, anti-labor laws and practices, and in favor of birth control.
George Takei was one of the Japanese Americans interned under Roosevelt’s order, and recently starred on Broadway in the biographical play Allegiance.
George Takei and Brad Altman, partners for over 20 years, were the first same-sex couple to apply for a marriage license in West Hollywood
There has been a dramatic shift in recent years in Americans’ attitudes about gay marriage, with support for same-sex marriage rising from 37% in 2009 to 57% in May 2015, according to recent Pew Research Center polling. Among the groups most likely to favor same-sex marriage today are Millennials (73%), Democrats (65%) and people without any religious affiliation (85%).
ETA: count me among them, a baby boomer, religious person (Protestant), fiscally and military conservative and socially moderate guy who tends to vote Republican.
In 2004, Massachusetts became the first state to legalize gay marriage, in the popularly acclaimed *Goodridge *decision, continuing its proud record of leading the US in civil rights progress and social awareness. Governor Mitt Romney did his best to footdrag implementation, invoking a long-forgotten anti-miscegenation law, as part of his positioning for a run at the Republican Presidential nomination.

Anti-homosexual “researcher” Paul Cameron and his Family Research Institute, co-wrote a 1994 paper entitled “The Lifespan of Homosexuals.” Using obituaries collected from newspapers serving the gay community, he and his two co-authors concluded that gay men died, on average, at 43, compared to an average life expectancy at the time of around 73 for all U.S. men. On the basis of the same obituaries, Cameron also claimed that gay men are 18 times more likely to die in car accidents than heterosexuals, 22 times more likely to die of heart attacks than whites, and 11 times more likely than blacks to die of the same cause. He also concluded that lesbians are 487 times more likely to die of murder, suicide, or accidents than straight women.
This article has been totally discredited. And Cameron was kicked out of the American Psychiatric Association.
One of the 56 Signers of the Declaration of Independence, Benjamin Rush from Pennsylvania, is on the logo for the Ameican Psychiatric Association. Rush’s study of mental disorder made him one of the founders of American psychiatry.
Manue Linares, a physicist, is also the founder of a chain of ice cream shops in suburban Barcelona. Linares has developed an ice cream flavor, called Xameleon, which changes color when you lick it. It tastes like tutti-frutti, and changes from purple to pink as it melts.
Pat Boone recorded a white cover of Little Richard’s “Tutti Frutti”, apparently not knowing the original lyrics, about a gay man, went
“Tutti Frutti, good booty
If it don’t fit, don’t force it
You can grease it, make it easy”
Pat & Shirley Boones daughter Cherry struggled for years with anorexia and bulimia, nearly starving to death before finally overcoming her eating disorders after she and her husband Dan O’Neil left California for Oregon and Dr. Raymond E. Vath, the psychiatrist they credit with saving her life.
Pat & Shirley resisted all efforts to get Cherry psychiatric help, believing their faith in God could cure their daughter.
Cherry Boone lives in Sammamish, Washington. Sammamish is where a young, 23 year old Clint Eastwood worked as a lifeguard in 1953.
Cherry Boone and her husband Dan O’Neill converted to the Catholic faith and have five children.

“Daniel” is a major hit song and ballad by Elton John. It appeared on the 1973 album Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only the Piano Player. It was written by John and his lyricist Bernie Taupin. Bernie Taupin wrote “Daniel” after reading an article in either Time or Newsweek about a Vietnam War veteran who had been wounded, and wanted to get away from the attention he was receiving when he went back home.
