Bill Russell was not the only future Hall of Famer on Oakland’s McClymonds High School’s basketball team. One of his teammates was baseball great Frank Robinson.

MC Hammer is an alumnus of Oakland’s McClymonds High School.

One of the nicknames of King Edward I of England was the “Hammer of the Scots” for his brutal treatment of Scotland in numerous wars.

Charlemagne’s father was Charles Martel, Charles the Hammer, so named for his victory at Tours that stopped the Moorish invasion of Gaul and western Europe.

Phillip H. Sheridan, George Armstrong Custer and William T. Sherman were the founders of the USA’s main artillery fort at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

In his third year at West Point, Philip Sheridan was suspended for a year for fighting with a classmate, William R. Terrill. They both went on to serve as Generals in the Civil War; Terrill was killed at the Battle of Perryville, aged 28. Terrill’s Confederate brother, James, was also killed during the same war, making the Terrills, a Virginia family, one of the few sets of American brothers killed in action while commanding brigades.

Hyacinth and Richard Bucket’s son Sheridan, and his boyfriend Tarquin, never appeared on “Keeping Up Appearances”.

In the 1981 Crosby by-election in England, candidate John Desmond Dougrez-Lewis changed his name to the outlandish Monty Python character Tarquin Fin-tim-lin-bin-whin-bim-lim-bus-stop-F’tang-F’tang-Olé-Biscuitbarrel, from the sketch Election Night Special.

Founded in 1914, headquartered in Modena, Emilia-Romagne, Italy by the brothers Alfieri, Bindo, Carlo, Ettore and Ernesto Maserati, the cars of Maserati have the logo of Neptune’s trident, in red, on a field of white inspired by the statue of the Fountain of Neptune in Bologna’s Piazza Maggiore. Beneath the trident is a blue field with MASERATI in white.

The first all-Maserati car was the 1926 Maserati Tipo 26, powered by a 1.5L straight-8 engine.

Founded in 1947, headquartered in Maranello, Emilia-Romagne, Italy by Enzo Ferrari, the cars of Ferrari have the logo of a black prancing horse facing to the left on a field of yellow, which is the color of the city of Modena. At the bottom of the logo is either the word Ferrari or the letters “S F” which stand for Scuderia Ferrari, in black. Scuderia Ferrari is the racing division of Ferrari cars, and scuderia means as in a stable of horses.

The first Ferrari-badged car was the 1947 Ferrari125 S, powered by a 1.5L V-12 engine (in red, of course!).

The first Lamborghini-badged car was the 1963 Lamborghini 350 GTV, powered by a 3.5L V-12 engine.

Balsamic vinegar has been produced in the region around Modena, Italy since the Middle Ages. The original, costly, traditional balsamic vinegar (Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale), is made from a reduction of cooked white Trebbiano grape juice, but the most common variety is Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, which allows the use of grape must up to 90%.

Balsamic vinegar contains no balsam, which is a sap. The name balsam comes from the bible’s Balm of Gilead, a healing ointment or perfume that comes from the region of Gilead, a region east of the Jordan River occupied by two of the twelve tribes of Israel, Gad and Manasseh.

Balsamic vinegar contains no balsam: the Italian balsamico means balsam-like.

The balsam fir is a common and widespread conifer of easstern North America. It is believed that the needles of the balsam fir, which are high in ascorbic acid, were used to prevent scurvy among seamen on Jacques Cartier’s second voyage to Canada. Balsam fir sap is also the balsam glue that is used in microscopy for preparing specimen slides.

In 1534, On his first major voyage to North America, Jacques Cartier discovered and claimed for France the smallest of Canada’s provinces, Prince Edward Island. On his second voyage, in 1535, he sailed up the St. Lawrence River, and when he returned he reported that a great river, perhaps 2,000 miles long, possibly led to Asia.

The French name for PEI was Isle St-Jean, but the British re-named it in honour of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, Victoria’s father. The PEI coat of arms shows three small oak trees sheltered by a larger oak tree. The symbolism was that the three counties of PEI were protected by Great Britain.
