FDR’s Vice President for his first two terms, John Nance Garner, observed that the office was “not worth a bucket of warm spit.” The last word may have been slightly misquoted.
Jennifer Garner graduated from Denison University in Granville, Ohio; she filmed the 2014 movie Draft Day with Kevin Costner, Denis Leary and Frank Langella in Cleveland, Ohio.
St. Denis, Bishop of Paris in the 3rd century, was an early Christian martyr. He is said to have picked his head up after being decapitated, and walked six miles, while preaching a sermon of repentance the entire way. He is venerated in the Roman Catholic Church as patron of Paris, France, and as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. The medieval and modern French name “Denis” derives from the ancient Greek name Dionysius.
Dionysus is the god of the grape harvest, winemaking and wine, of ritual madness, fertility, theatre and religious ecstasy in Greek mythology. Wine played an important role in Greek culture with the cult of Dionysus the main religious focus for unrestrained consumption.
off-subject: Why did we end up with the party-pooper Hebrew God? This is a God I could support…;);)
Cesar Chavez co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) with Dolores Huerta. It was later called the United Farm Workers (UFW). When Filipino American farm workers initiated the Delano grape strike on September 8, 1965, to protest for higher wages, Chavez eagerly supported them. Six months later, Chavez and the NFWA led a strike of California grape pickers on the historic farmworkers march from Delano to the California state capitol in Sacramento for similar goals. The UFW encouraged all Americans to boycott table grapes as a show of support. The strike lasted five years and attracted national attention.
Larry Itliong was a Filipino American labor organizer. He organized West Coast agricultural workers starting in the 1930s, and rose to national prominence in 1965, when he, Philip Vera Cruz, Benjamin Gines and Pete Velasco, walked off the farms of area table-grape growers, demanding wages equal to the federal minimum wage, that became known as the Delano grape strike. He has been described as “one of the fathers of the West Coast labor movement.” The United Farm Workers of America (UFW) originated from the merger of two workers’ rights organizations, the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC) led by Larry Itliong, and the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA) led by César Chávez and Dolores Huerta.
Itliong was sometimes known as “Seven Fingers”; he lost three fingers in a cannery accident.
The Finger Lakes of New York are eleven long and narrow north-south lakes between Syracuse to the east and Geneseo to the west. They originated as eleven northward flowing rivers, and then during the Pleistocene glaciation, were scoured wider and deeper into the narrow lakes they are today.
Unlike American football teams, which have eleven players. Canadian football uses twelve on a team, a larger field, and much more liberal timing rules. Overall, the Canadian game is much wilder, particularly in the last three minutes, leading to one of the CFL’s marketing mottos: “No lead is safe.”
Trans-Canada Air Lines was a Canadian airline and operated as the country’s flag carrier. Its corporate headquarters were in Montreal, Quebec. Its first president was Gordon Roy McGregor. The airline operated under its original name from 1937 to 1965, when it was officially renamed Air Canada, the name it bears to this day.
I don’t see how this relates to #31,207. But I will play off of it, off of decapitation.
The Verrückt is the name of the world’s tallest waterslide. It is in Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Kansas City KS (“Schlitterbahn” is German for “slippery road.”). The Verrückt is 168’ high, and riders’ speeds reach an estimated 65 MPH.
Tragically, last week a 10-year old boy died while descending the ride with two other adult women riders who were not related to him. Reports say he died of a traumatic neck injury, and some reports say he was decapitated.
The young, 10-year old Caleb Thomas Schweib was the son of Scott Schweib and his wife, Michele. Scott Schweib is currently a member of the Kansas House of Representatives.
Grumble, grumble, don’t know why I bother, grumble…;)
In play: Mace is the genericized trademark of Chemical Mace, the brand name of an early type of aerosol self defense spray invented by Allan Lee Litman in 1965. The original formulation consisted of 1% phenacyl chloride (CN) tear gas in a solvent of 2-butanol, propylene glycol, cyclohexene, and dipropylene glycol methyl ether. Due to the potentially toxic nature of CN and the generally superior incapacitating qualities of oleoresin capsicum (OC) pepper spray in most situations the early CN has been mostly supplanted.
On August 21, 1986 over 1,700 villagers in Cameroon were suffocated when Lake Nyos literally exploded in what’s known as a limnic eruption, sending a fountain of water over 300 feet into the air and creating a small tsunami. Hundreds of thousands of tons of carbon dioxide gas burst forth at 60 miles an hour, suffocating people up to 15 miles away. Of the 800 residents of nearby Nyos, six survived. In all, 1,746 people died and more than 3,500 livestock perished in a matter of minutes.
On January 15, 1919, in Boston’s North End, a 50-foot-tall tank holding 2.3 million gallons of molasses burst, unleashing a deadly wave that rose nearly 25 feet high, smashed buildings, and even damaged the steel supports of an elevated railway. Rescuers had to wade through knee-deep molasses and sticky debris to reach survivors. Twenty-one people and many horses died in the disaster, from drowning, suffocation or blunt force trauma; another 150 people were injured.
Just being my contrary self, Bullitt; I think Annie’s post was for information and not for the game, but I don’t mind…much…just was having a little fun as the similies indicated.
