Trivia Dominoes: Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

Salem Oregon and Salem Missouri are the only two Salem’s I’ve ever lived in.

Salem icigaretts were introduced in 1956 by the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company as the first filter-tipped menthol cigarette. The name (along with that of the Winston brand) derives from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the city where RJR was founded and headquartered

ZIP Code™ Lookup | USPS is a US Postal Service search engine that determines an address’s Zip+4 code. The USPS does not recognize the hyphen in the city name of Winston-Salem NC. A test address of 501 S Poplar St., Winston-Salem NC returns the Zip +4 code of 27101-5238.

It also returns the city as Winston Salem, not Winston-Salem - without the hyphen. Ironically, the sign hanging on the USPS location in downtown Winston-Salem has a hyphen. The sign reads “United States Postal Service, Winston-Salem, NC.”

501 S Poplar St, Centralia, IL is the Farm Fresh Milk Store.

Harvey Milk, the assassinated member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, is the first American gay-rights activist to have a U.S. Postal Service commemorative postage stamp issued in his honor.

The first woman to be depicted on a US Postage stamp was Queen Isabella, shown in the 1892 pictorial Columbian commemorative series.

The collection of Precolumbian art, artifacts and jewelry in New York City’s Metropolitan Museum includes a Peruvian Moche whistle shaped like a warrior. Scholars think that in Moche society, whistling was a sound produced to communicate with the ancestors when a human sacrificial offering was made.

The roof garden of the Metropolitan Museum of Art offers “spectacular” views of the Manhattan skyline from a vantage point high above Central Park. The views have been described as “the best in Manhattan.” Art critics have been known to complain that the view “distracts” from the art on exhibition. New York Times art critic Ken Johnson complains that the “breathtaking, panoramic views of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline” creates “an inhospitable site for sculpture” that “discourages careful, contemplative looking.” Writer Mindy Aloff describes the roof garden as "the loveliest airborne space I know of in New York.

The Metropolitan Museum of Manila, known as The Met (www.metmuseum.ph) was established in 1976 and bills itself as the Philippines’ premier museum of modern and contemporary visual arts.

The Mets and the Bills are pro sports teams that play at opposite ends of New York State.

The Philippine history dioramas have been a popular attraction at the Ayala Museum in Makati, Metro Manila, since 1973.
Carved by artisans from Paete, Laguna, the dioramas are an achievement in woodcarving as well as in miniature painting and decoration. They depict sixty major events and themes in history, from prehistoric Philippines to the recognition of Philippine independence by the United States in 1946.

(This was originally meant to play off post #31764 but it also works using “Metro Manila” and “Mets” since both “Metro” and the name “Mets” are short for “Metropolitan/s”)

Comment: yes, however the Mets have won a championship while the Bills have not.

Sixteen cities make up Metro Manila. These are:

Cubi Point Naval Air Station, Philippines was built by the U.S. Navy Seabees after civilian contractors said it could not be built. It involved, among other things, blasting and hauling away half of a mountain and removing 100 foot trees. As the story goes, the Chief of Naval Operations at that time named the base after Construction Unit Battalion 1 (or CUB1). I’m unable to confirm.

Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando is named for European explorer Francisco de Coronado. The resort is built around a 15-acre lake, Lago Dorado, and showcases architecture and landscaping inspired by cities of Mexico and the American Southwest such as Monterey and Santa Fe. There is a stepped Mayan pyramid towering over 120’x90’ pool area with a water slide and a playground that doubles as an archaeological dig site for kids. A jaguar-shaped fountain perched over the water slide splashes water at guests as they slide down.

Completion of the United States–Mexico barrier as currently proposed will reduce the viability of any population of jaguars currently residing in the United States, by reducing gene flow with Mexican populations, and prevent any further northward expansion for the species.

Jaguar Land Rover vehicles has been owned by Tata Motors, an Indian company, since 2008.
