Trivia Dominoes: Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

Schloss Bürresheim, in Mayen, Germany, is about 100 miles west of Frankfurt. 3 garderobes can be seen there.

Jan Mayen Land is an uninhabited arctic island belonging to Norway, lying between Iceland and Svalbard. It’s earliest known inhabitants consisted of Irish monks, berween the fifth and eleventh centuries. It’s principal value to Norway is to give the kingdom an economic zone, to exploit the fisheries of the North Atlantic.

Its, without an apostrophe, is the possessive of the pronoun it. It’s, with an apostrophe, is a contraction of it is or it has. If you’re not sure which spelling to use, try replacing it with it is or it has. If neither of those phrases works in its place, then its is the word you’re looking for.

A simple reminder trick for when to use its or it’s is the sentence, “It’s its own.”

(I can’t believe I did that, twice – I do know the difference. It was the last thing I did at bedtime, probably just automatic touch-typing.)

The stage magidcian Teller decided to assume his mute persona, when he found that when performing tricks as a beginner, there were fewer opportunities for hecklers if he didn’t say anything.

It’s an illusion! A trick is something whores do for money. Or candy.

The IBM 2984 Cash Issuing Terminal, installed at Lloyds Bank in Essex, England in December 1972, was the first true ATM that was similar in function to today’s machines. Today, the newest cash machine at Royal Bank of Scotland allows customers to withdraw cash up to £100 without a card by inputting a six-digit code requested through their smartphones.

Ninja’ed and can’t fit it in.

The Dubai International Airport Terminal 3 is the largest terminal building in the world by floor space, with over18,440,000 square feet of space, capable of handling 60 million passengers in a year. It has 20 gates capable of handling the Airbus A380 double-decker Jumbo jet.

The Airbus A380-900 can carry about 900 passengers in an economy-only configuration. It costs about US $400M.

There are still prop-driven airliners being built and put into service. The Bombardier Q400, with a seating capacity of 76 passengers, still makes new airliners in Canada, formerly branded DeHavilland. Most are delivered to airlines in Africa and the Middle East. They have short takeoff and landing capability, and are ideally suited for small airports. (I flew on two of them last month. A friend of mine is a test pilot and flies every Q400 before delivery.)

Arguably the first successful propeller commercial airliner was the Douglas DC-3. It revolutionized commercial air travel in the 1930s and 1940s with it’s range of 1,500 miles and it’s 200 mph cruising speed. Over 16,000 of them were built, including over 10,000 for military use.

My mother served as a stewardess on the DC-3 with Philippine Air Lines. She was the airline’s “Miss Aviation”, described as a ‘Eurasian beauty’, for 1959.

It’s its own.

On June 13, 1952, Soviet warplanes allegedly shot down a Swedish military Douglas DC-3A-360 Skytrain carrying out signals intelligence gathering operations over international waters of the Baltic Sea. Allegedly, this was followed by the shootdown of a Catalina flying boat searching for the Skytrain three days later. The Catalina’s crew of five were saved. The Soviet Union publicly denied involvement until its dissolution in 1991.

The isthmus of Santa Catalina Island in California is only about 2500 feet wide. It is occupied by the town of Two Harbors

Two towns on Long Island in New York were important whaling ports, Cold Spring Harbor on the north shore and Sag Harbor on the south shore. Sag Harbor is currently a village with around 2000 inhabitants, but 1789 Sag Harbor had more tons of commercial square-rigged vessels than even New York City. It had become an international port and in that year Sag Harbor was declared the first official port on entering the United States, where ships would stop before sailing to New York City to finish their trip.

The isthmus of Long Island is only about 2500 feet wide. It is occupied by the town of Montauk.

According to guinnessWorldRecords.com the longest transcontinental isthmus in the world is Panama. Panama measures 676 km long and 50 km wide at its narrowest point and provides the only land connection between the North American and South American continents. As long as you can get through the Darien Gap, that is.

The Transcontinental Trans-Siberian Railway, built between 1891 and 1916, is a network of railways connecting Moscow with the Russian Far East, specifically Vladivostok. With a length of 5,772 miles, it is the longest railway line in the world.

Oscar and Tony winner Yul Brynner was born in Vladivostok in 1920. Best known for his role in The King And I, Brynner also appeared in The Ten Commandments, The Buccaneer, The Magnificent Seven and Westworld.

One of the most famous mysteries set on a railway is Agatha Christie’s * Murder On The Orient Express.* Christie incorporated several real-life elements into the book, including a crime based on the Lindbergh kidnapping and a snowstorm that stopped the train for six days.
Ingrid Bergman received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in the 1974 film version.
