The oldest Chinese recording of a solar eclipse was back in 781 BC - on June 4.

Sir Edmund Halley is credited with making the first observations of Baily’s beads during the eclipse of 22 April 1715. They were also seen by Maclaurin from Edinburgh during the annular eclipse of 1 March 1737 and by Williams from Revolutionary War America on 27 October 1780 from just outside the path of totality. But it was Francis Baily’s widely–disseminated description of the phenomenon during the annular eclipse of 15 May 1836 that led to their bearing his name thereafter.

The name Edmund comes from the Old English elements ead “wealth, fortune” and mund “protection”. This was the name of two Anglo-Saxon kings of England. “Edmond” is a French form of the name. Astronomer Halley (as well as his father who bore the same name) is described in many references as “Edmond (also spelled Edmund)”

Kirby’s round appearance and ability to copy his foes’ powers has made him a well known figure in video games, consistently ranked as one of the most iconic video game characters.

In the New Brunswick election of 1865, the anti-Confederates defeated the pro-Confederates. Since New Brunswick’s geographical location made it crucial to the Confederation project, the election put a halt to Confederation for a period of about a year.

On June 7, 1494, Ferdinand II of Aragon and John II of Portugal signed the Treaty of Tordesillas, dividing the Americas and Africa between their two countries. The flag of Portugal is a rectangular bicolor with an unevenly-divided red and green field. The aspect ratio of width to length of Portugal’s flag is 2:3 - its length is 1.5 times its width. That is a very common aspect ratio of national flags. Over 100 nations’ flags have a 2:3 aspect ratio. Another common aspect ratio is 1:2, and over 100 nations’ flags have a 1:2 aspect ratio.

Only four nations have a flag whose aspect ratio is 10:19:

  • LBR, Liberia
  • MHL, the Marshall Islands
  • FSM, Micronesia
  • USA, the United States

The 3-letter country abbreviations used come from the ISO 3166 standard.

ETA - ninja’d but my play still works. BTW, Belgium’s flag’s official aspect ratio is 13:15, and BEL is the only country to use that ratio. However, the 2:3 version (also the civil ensign) is used more commonly on land than the 13:15 official flag.

The distinctive diamond-star-patterned Ft. Sumter flag was lowered in defeat with the fall of the United States fort in Charleston, S.C. harbor on April 14, 1861, and raised again there in triumph by the same officer four years later to the day.

About two dozen species of Lapwings occur in the world, but none in North America. They are among the very few birds that can also frequently be heard calling at night, although they are not nocturnal in their usual habits.

Although indefinite in nature, a few is usually more than two (two often being referred to as “a couple of”), and less than “several”. If the sample population is say between 5 and 20, a few would mean three or four, but no more than this. However, if the population sample size were in the millions, “a few” could refer to several hundred items. In other words, few in this context means a very very small percentage but far more than the 3 or 4 usually ascribed to it in its use with much much smaller numbers.
