Elephant Island is an ice-covered mountainous island off the coast of Antarctica in the outer reaches of the South Shetland Islands, in the Southern Ocean. Its name was given by early explorers sighting elephant seals on its shores. The island is situated 152 miles north-northeast of the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula 550 miles southeast of Cape Horn.
Three warships of the British Royal Navy have been named HMS Elephant. Two other ships were originally given that name, but subsequently renamed. The most recent commissioned warship of that name was a 74-gun third-rate vessel launched in 1786 and broken up in 1830.
On August 1, 1801, the American schooner* USS Enterprise* captured the Tripolitan vessel* Tripoli *off the coast of modern-day Libya. Barbary pirates had seized American merchant ships and holding the crews for ransom. It was the first military action in foreign lands and seas authorized by Congress.
The line “the shores of Tripoli” in the Marine Hymn refers to the Barbary War of 1801-1805, specifically the Battle of Derne in 1805. The Hymn is the oldest official song in the United States Armed Forces.
Tripoli (Tarabulus in Arabic) is a Greek word meaning ‘three cities’. Tripoli was originally founded by the Phoenicians, who named it Oea. There is also a Tripoli, Lebanon, also founded by the Phoenicians.
The Tri-cities of Pasco, Richland and Kennewick are located in central Washington state. By an odd quirk, Tri-Cities Regional Airport is located in Blountville, Tennessee. The Tri-cities of Davenport IA and Moline and Rock Island IL are called the Quad Cities, implying a fourth one, but there is no historical agreement about what the fourth one might be. There are several other towns in the vicinity, each of which calls itself the fourth one, and denies that there is a fifth one as well…
There are a number of areas in the 48 contiguous United States known informally as tri-state areas. Often, a tri-state area is an area associated with a town or metropolis that lies across three states.
The New York metropolitan area, which covers parts of the states of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut is one of the most commonly identified tri-state areas. It is frequently referenced in New York TV and radio.
The Delaware Valley region, which includes eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, and northern Delaware, is also referred to as a tri-state area in radio and TV advertising in the Philadelphia market.
Four other prominent areas that have been labeled tri-state areas are the Cincinnati tri-state area, including Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana; the Pittsburgh tri-state area, covering parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia; the Chicago tri-state area, also known as Chicagoland, which includes parts of Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin; and the Greater Memphis area or Mid-South consisting of West Tennessee, North Mississippi, and the Arkansas delta.

The USS Ohio is the oldest Trident ballistic missile submarine in the U.S. Navy. In 2003-2006, she was converted to a conventional missile submarine, one of four Ohio-class subs thus adapted; the others are USS Florida, Michigan and Georgia.
A trident is a three-pronged spear used for spear fishing. The trident is the weapon of Poseidon, or Neptune, the god of the sea in classical mythology. In Hindu mythology it is the weapon of Shiva.

There are approximately 15,330 radio stations in the United states; 4,698 broadcast in the AM band, 6,666 are FM Commercial, and 4,091 are classified as FM Educational.
Radio frequencies occupy the range from a 3 kHz to 300 GHz, although commercially important uses of radio use only a small part of this spectrum. Other types of electromagnetic radiation, with frequencies above the RF range, are infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays. Since the energy of an individual photon of radio frequency is too low to remove an electron from an atom, radio waves are classified as non-ionizing radiation.
Spectrum, in its original Latin usage, meant a visible incorporeal spirit, especially one of a terrifying nature, such as a ghost, phantom, or apparition. That meaning is now occupied in the English vocabulary as"specter".
