Trivia Dominoes: Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

Coins issued by the former colony of Newfoundland are still legal tender in Canada.

In the 1950-70s, two different resettlement programs resulted in 300 Newfoundland communities being abandoned, under government programs that paid families (30,000 people) about a year’s incomem to move to more centralized locations. Before the resettlement the communities had no access to the outside world except by coastal boat. Hundreds of houses were removed from heir foundations and floated by sea to new locations. There are still several Newfoundland towns that do not yet have road access, and are accessible only by boat.

On July 30 of 1492, the entire Jewish community, some 200,000 people, were expelled from Spain by orders of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. Many of the Jews resettled in the Ottoman Empire, whose ruler said: “How can you call Ferdinand of Aragon a wise king? The same Ferdinand who impoverished his own land and enriched ours?” Those that fled to Portugal were forcibly converted to Christianity.

With a population of over 205 million, Brazil is by far the world’s largest Portuguese-speaking nation and the only one in the Americas. Portuguese was introduced during the Portuguese colonial period. Portuguese has also served as a lingua franca between the various ethnic groups in Brazil and the native Amerindian population after the Jesuits were expelled from every Portuguese territory and the languages associated with them prohibited. Portuguese is the first language of the overwhelming majority of Brazilians, at 99.5%.

In 1984, Brian Mulroney led the Progressive Conservative Party to the largest majority in history in Canada’s federal Parliament, winning 211 seats out of 282 in the House of Commons, a gain of 111 seats.

In the 1993 election under his successor, widely seen as a plebiscite on the Mulroney government, the PC Party won 2 seats.

Progressive Conservative is an oxymoron.

Oxymoron is derived from the 5th century Latin word oxymorus, oxymōrus, which is derived from the Ancient Greek ὀξύς oksús “sharp, keen, pointed” and μωρός mōros “dull, stupid, foolish,” making the word itself an oxymoron.

This thread is not the place for political commentary. Drop it.

On November 10, 1202, participants engaged to commence the Fourth Crusade in the Holy Land attacked Zadar, Croatia, a Catholic city, beginning the Siege of Zara. Pope Innocent III had issued letters in Latin (to prevent ninja) forbidding such an action and threatened excommunication. In 1203, Innocent excommunicated the entire crusading army, but later gave them an absolution.

My last post should have been ninja’d, unless perhaps the word “issued” picks up from a posting still in play.

ozzie, you’re good, I’m playing off of #33664.

in play: Almost 90% of Croatians are Roman Catholic. The second largest religious group are Eastern Orthodox (about 4%), and those are mostly people of Serbian origin. Another group are Muslims at about 3%.

It wasn’t a political commentary. It was a statement that progressive and conservative are, in almost any context, antonyms by definition, which defines an oxymoron… Playing off the isolated reference "progressive conservative’ in the previous post, according to the rules of the thread.

Playing off TSSR’s post:

The current Roman Catholic pontiff is the first pope named Francis, and the first trained as a Jesuit.

A number of films have been inspired by the lives and works of the Jesuits, among them Roland Joffe’s The Mission (1986), Bruce Beresford’s Black Robe (1991) and Ignacio de Loyola (2016), a biopic.

Rome, Oregon is an unincorporated community in the southeastern part of the state, on the west bank of the Owyhee River. It is named after a nearby spectacular geographic feature, seen here, that reminded early settlers of pillars in the ancient city of Rome.

Nnjah!

I think it was political commentary as well…or–at the very least–a bit of a political potshot, so that’s two mods asking you to cut out things like that…and if you have anything you want to discuss about it from here on, please make a thread in ATMB as to not disrupt this game (so, don’t reply to this continuing to debate against it in this thread…make a thread in the forum where that sort of stuff is supposed to go).

The watershed of the Owyhee River was part of region inhabited by the Shoshone and Bannock Indians. The name of the river is from the older spelling of “Hawaii”. It was named for three Hawaiian trappers, in the employ of the North West Company, who were sent to explore the uncharted river. They failed to return to the rendezvous near the Boise River and were never seen again.

Cascadia is an independence movement that would create a country out of several western US states and possibly part of Canada. This would create a country of about 15 million people with an economy generating upwards of $700 billion in goods and services annually.

On July 25, 1139, Prince Afonso Henriques led Portuguese troops to victory over the Almoravid Moors at the Battle of Ourique. A legend of the miracle of the Battle of Ourique developed and served as a political instrument to defend Portuguese independence as divine will. Yet, the legend first appeared in the 15th century and was forged by the monks of the Monastery of Santa Cruz.
