“UY Scuti” is a bright red supergiant and pulsating variable star in the constellation Scutum. It is a current and leading candidate for being the largest known star by radius and is also one of the most luminous of its kind. It has an estimated radius of 1,708 solar radii (1.188×109 kilometres; 7.94 astronomical units); thus a volume nearly 5 billion times that of the Sun.

It is believed by some that the modern use of the phrase "a picture is worth a thousand wors: stems from an article by Fred R. Barnard in the advertising trade journal Printers’ Ink, promoting the use of images in advertisements that appeared on the sides of streetcars. The December 8, 1921 issue carries an ad entitled, “One Look is Worth A Thousand Words.” Another ad by Barnard appears in the March 10, 1927, issue with the phrase “One Picture Worth Ten Thousand Words”, where it is labeled a Chinese proverb. The Home Book of Proverbs, Maxims, and Familiar Phrases quotes Barnard as saying he called it "a Chinese proverb, so that people would take it seriously."Nonetheless, the proverb soon after became popularly attributed to Confucius. The actual Chinese expression “Hearing something a hundred times isn’t better than seeing it once” (百闻不如一见, p bǎi wén bù rú yī jiàn) is sometimes introduced as an equivalent, as Watts’s “One showing is worth a hundred sayings”.

Barnard College, in New York City, was founded in 1889 as a women’s college. Among its alumnae are Martha Stewart, Joan Rivers, Suzanne Vega, Helen Gahagan, and Jeane Kirkpatrick.

In the leadup to the Falklands War of 1982, British diplomats thought that US Ambassador to the UN Jeane Kirkpatrick, who favored stronger ties with South America even arguably at the expense of the US-UK “special relationship,” was one of their biggest opponents in the Reagan Administration.

Although the Falkland Islands may have been visited in prehistoric times, the islands were uninhabited at the time of their discovery by Europeans. Claims of discovery date back to the 16th century, but no consensus exists on whether these early explorers discovered the Falklands or other islands in the South Atlantic. The first recorded landing on the islands is attributed to English captain John Strong, who discovered the Falkland Sound in 1690 and noted the islands’ water and game.

On January 1, 1739, French explorer Jean-Baptiste Charles Bouvet de Lozier discovered a remote island in the South Atlantic Ocean, to which he gave his family name. Bouvet Island is today probably the most remote island on the planet.

St. Jean-Baptiste is the patron saint of both Quebec and Canada. La Fête St-Jean-Baptiste (June 24) is the national holiday for Quebec and triggers an outpouring of sovereigntist fervour.

Charles XIV & III John, also known as Carl John, was King of Sweden (as Charles XIV John) and King of Norway (as Charles III John) from 1818 until his death in 1844. He began life as Jean-Baptiste Jules Bernadotte and was appointed as a Marshal of France by Napoleon, but was elected to replace the childless King Charles XIII.

Folke Bernadotte, Count of Wisborg, was a Swedish diplomat and nobleman. During World War II he negotiated the release of about 31,000 prisoners from German concentration camps including 450 Danish Jews from the Theresienstadt camp. After the war, Bernadotte was unanimously chosen to be the United Nations Security Council mediator in the Arab–Israeli conflict of 1947–1948. He was assassinated in Jerusalem in 1948 by the militant Zionist group Lehi while pursuing his official duties.

Two Marshals of the Empire, colleagues of Marshal Bernadotte, (note: not Marshals of France during the First Empire) were executed by firing squad: Ney, by the Bourbon regime, for having supported Napoleon during the 100 Days, and Murat, for having attempted to maintain his position as King of Naples after the fall of Napoleon.

Both met death standing, unblindfolded, and giving the command to the firing squads to shoot for the heart. Murat, a noted dandy, added: “but spare the face.”

The President of the United States appoints, with the advice and consent of the Senate, a United States Marshal for all 93 Federal districts. Many of them have no prior law-enforcement experience, but are primarily administrators, assisted in their duties by a cadre of permanent and professional deputy U.S. marshals.

Deputy Dawg was a Terrytoons cartoon character featured on the animated television series of the same name in 1962-63. The other main characters are the ‘varmints’ he chased (mostly in vain): Muskie Muskrat, Moley Mole, Possible 'Possum, Ty Coon, Vincent van Gopher, and Pig Newton.

The principal responsibilities of a sheriff in the State of Ohio are service of legal papers, running the county jail, guarding county offices and courts, and patrolling unincorporated areas of the county as needed.

Although the Sheriff of Nottingham in the Robin Hood legend is a fictional character, at the time that the events are alleged to occur, the title was actually High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and the Royal Forests. The position was split into individual Sheriffs of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire in 1567. The current Sheriff of Nottinghamshire is Colonel David R Sneath.

Sheriffs are elected in most of Ohio’s 88 counties, but in Cuyahoga County (the greater Cleveland area), due to a charter adopted by the voters in 2009, the sheriff is appointed by the County Executive with the advice and consent of the County Council.

The National Security Agency is part of the U.S. Department of Defense and is typically headed by a military general officer, while the Central Intelligence Agency is a non-military agency headed by a civilian.

Although humans have been the primary focus of intelligence researchers, scientists have also attempted to investigate animal intelligence, or more broadly, animal cognition. These researchers are interested in studying both mental ability in a particular species, and comparing abilities between species. They study various measures of problem solving, as well as numerical and verbal reasoning abilities. Some challenges in this area are defining intelligence so that it has the same meaning across species (e.g. comparing intelligence between literate humans and illiterate animals), and also operationalizing a measure that accurately compares mental ability across different species and contexts.

The Central Intelligence Agency has, especially since 9-11, developed an extensive paramilitary capability. Initial plans for the raid in Pakistan which killed Osama bin Laden anticipated that CIA paramilitary forces would be used, but eventually the task was assigned to the Navy SEALs, who carried out the May 2011 mission successfully.
