A number of comedians, including David Frye and Bob and Ray (Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding) did routines with the doctor who delivered Richard Nixon saying, after the birth, “I don’t know what it is, but I just don’t trust that baby.”
The Elliott Pecan, is a pecan variety planted predominately in Georgia and Florida. The first Elliott tree was a seedling in the lawn of the American lumberman Henry Elliot in Milton, Florida.
The poet John Milton (1608-1679) was once considered England’s greatest writer. He was seen as superior even to Shakespeare, whose language and scenes were considered coarse and crude. Milton’s Paradise Lost is unrivalled as the greatest religious epic in the English language. He wrote most of the poem when he had lost his sight; he would compose around 30 lines every night, memorize them and then dictate them to a scribe who arrived in the morning.
One religious epic older than John Milton’s Paradise Lost is the Bible.
On January 25, 1971, Idi Amin Dada seized power in a military coup d’état from President Milton Obote, beginning eight years of military rule in Uganda. Amin’s rule was characterized by human rights abuses, political repression, ethnic persecution, extrajudicial killings, nepotism, corruption, and gross economic mismanagement. The number of people killed as a result of his regime is estimated by international observers and human rights groups to range from 100,000 to 500,000.
Far from paying for his crimes, Idi Amin decamped with his fortune to Libya and then onward to Saudi Arabia, where he was given sanctuary, dying there in 2003 at age 78.
In the military, Idi Amin’s initial job was as a cook.
Idi Amin was played by American actor Forest Whitaker in the 2006 British drama The Last King of Scotland. Whitaker, who was born in Longview, Texas in 1961, won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance.
Former NFL running back Earl Campbell is nicknamed “The Tyler Rose” because he hails from Tyler TX. Tyler is about 35 miles southwest of Longview TX.
According to the Texas State Historical Society, the lyrics of the earliest version of the song “The Yellow Rose of Texas” originally referred to “a yellow girl,” a term used to describe a light-skinned bi-racial woman born of African-American and white progenitors. The song is written in the first person from the perspective of an African-American singer who refers to himself as a “darkey,” longing to return to his “yellow girl”.
The English and French lyrics of “O Canada” have no correspondence to each other. The anthem is essentially two different songs.
“El Gran Carlemany” or “The Great Charlemagne”) is the national anthem of the Principality of Andorra. It was adopted as the national anthem on September 8, 1921.
The Lyrics:
The great Charlemagne, my father,
from the Saracens liberated me
And from heaven he gave me life,
of Meritxell, the great Mother.
I was born a Princess, a Maiden
neutral between two nations.
I am the only remaining daughter,
of the Carolingian empire
Believing and free for eleven centuries,
a believer and free I will be.
The laws of the land be my tutors,
and my Princes[A] defenders!
And my Princes defenders!
Playing off of “liberated”: the Consolidated B-24 Liberator heavy bomber was one of the mainstay bombers of the Allied Forces in the European Theater of WWII. At nearly 19,000 units, it holds the distinction of being the most produced heavy bomber in history, the most produced multi-engine aircraft in history and the most-produced American military aircraft.
There are only two known airworthy examples of the B-24: Diamond Lil of the Commemorative Air Force (B-24/B-29 Squadron) in Addison TX, and Witchcraft, of the Collings Foundation in Stow MA.
The evil megacorporation of the 1981 Sean Connery sf thriller Outland is Consolidated Amalgamated or “Con-Am.” Peter Boyle played the company’s senior official on the remote mining outpost of Io.
In Greek mythology, Io was a princess whom Zeus fell in love with, then turned into a cow. Hera, in one of her typical jealous rages, caused a gadfly to sting the cow repeatedly until, attempting to escape, she jumped into the Black Sea strait known as the Bosporus (cow crossing).
People first domesticated cows about 5000 years ago. Cows came to America with Christopher Columbus. The average dairy cow produces about 10 gallons of milk a day and drinks about 30 gallons of water per day.
Lactose is a sugar found in milk. Lactase is the enzyme necessary to digest lactose. In most mammals, the production of lactase gradually declines towards adulthood.
In humans, lactase persistence into adulthood is a genetic difference between different populations. It is strongest in people of northern European heritage, where milk was a major protein source, as well as in some other pastoral peoples in Central Asia. However, in large parts of the world, such as Africa, south Asia and South America, populations are largely lactose-intolerant, as the production of lactase in the body gradually declines towards adulthood.
Nitpick: not so much in the northern part of South Asia, which has seen massive immigration over the centuries from Central Asia.
In play. Gibbons Decline and fall of the Roman Empire was one of the first histories to differentiate between primary and secondary sources.
Judges are elected in Ohio at all levels, including the state supreme court. A judge’s party affiliation will appear on the ballot in a partisan primary election, but not in the general election.
