In a very special (and extremely creepy) episode of Different Strokes, Arnold’s best friend Dudley Johnson was almost the victim of a pedophile, played by WKRP in Cincinnati’s “Big Guy” Gordon Jump.
Before Gordon Jump starred as the Big Guy in WKRP in Cincinnati, he had a supporting role in the first season of the ABC comedy Soap. He played Chief of Police Tinkler; his character would always introduce himself as ‘Piece of Chelief’ Tinkler.
The Kansas City Chiefs are an American Football team playing in the National Football League (NFL). The original owner of the team, Lamar Hunt, is credited as the person who came up with the name Super Bowl for the NFL’s championship game.
Of all teams that have appeared in a Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs have the second longest drought. Their last Super Bowl appearance was in Super Bowl IV when they beat the Minnesota Vikings in a huge upset, 23-7, in January 1970. The Vikings entered the game as 13-point favorites and got thoroughly crushed. The Chiefs haven’t returned to the Super Bowl since then.
The longest Super Bowl drought is owned by the New York Jets. Their last Super Bowl appearance was in Super Bowl III when they beat the Baltimore Colts in a huge upset, 16-7, in January 1969. The Colts entered the game as 18-point favorites and got thoroughly crushed. The Jets haven’t returned to the Super Bowl since then.
The back-to-back upsets of AFL teams beating NFL teams showed that the NFL was not necessarily the dominant league.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers currently have the longest championship drought in the CFL, having last won the Grey Cup in 1990, by a decisive score of 50 to 11 for the Edmonton Eskimos. The Bombers have made it back to the big game since then, but never won it.
The B-52 Stratofortress bombers still in service in the United States Air Force are significantly older than most of the men and women who maintain and fly them. The bombers first entered service in 1955; the last one was built in 1962. After being upgraded earlier this decade, they are expected to keep serving until the 2050s.
The Royal Canadian Air Farce was a comedy troupe that aired on Canadian radio for 24 years, and then another decade on TV, noted for their satirical skits, many of which would have been unacceptable on American broadcasts, so the show was not well know by American audiences.
Britain’s Royal Air Force was founded in 1918 by the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). To emphasize the merger of both military and naval aviation in the new service, many of the titles of officers were deliberately chosen to be of a naval character, such as flight lieutenant, wing commander, group captain, and air commodore. The names of RAF enlisted ranks come from British Army usage.
With its size of 194.5 square miles, Colorado Springs is the largest city by area in the state of Colorado.
The four largest cities by area in the United States are all located in Alaska; Sitka, Alaska, is the largest city by area in the country, with a land area of 2,870.3 square miles.
Cool trivia!
Sitka AK, on Baranof Island in the northern Alexander Archipelago in Alaska’s Panhandle, is the smallest of Alaska’s boroughs. Sitka is a city-borough. Urban Sitka, the part that is usually thought of as the “city” of Sitka, is on the west side of Baranof Island.
Comment: I might add Sitka to my destinations list when I drive up to the Arctic Ocean.
Baranof Island was named after Alexander Andreyevich Baranov. In 1799 Baranov was appointed by the recently chartered Russian-American Company as Chief Manager, effectively becoming the first governor of Russian America. He served until 1818. The United States Coast Guard has a ship named the USS Baranof.
Cutter is a popular brand of mosquito repellent, along with Off!. There is folklore that the most effective available product is Avon’s Skin So Soft lotion.
Per Wiki, “A cutter is typically a small, but in some cases a medium-sized, watercraft designed for speed rather than for capacity. Traditionally a cutter sailing vessel is a small single-masted boat, fore-and-aft rigged, with two or more headsails and often a bowsprit. The cutter’s mast may be set farther back than on a sloop. In modern usage, a cutter can be either a small- or medium-sized vessel whose occupants exercise official authority. Examples are harbor pilots’ cutters and cutters of the U.S. Coast Guard or UK Border Force.”
A Harbor Pilot is a mariner who guides ships through dangerous or congested waters, such as harbors or river mouths. Pilots are expert shiphandlers who possess detailed knowledge of local waterways. Often, the earliest pilots were local fishermen who knew the shifting sandbars and where the channel openings were that would allow ocean-going vessels to enter and depart the port.
