The name Tijeras means “scissors” in Spanish, and Tijeras Canyon in central New Mexico, east of Albuquerque separates the Sandia Mountains to the north from the Manzano Mountains to the south. In 1853, the US Congress commissioned Amiel Weeks Whipple (1817 - 1863), an Army Captain in the Topographical Corps, to survey a proposed transcontinental railroad. The outcome was a network of wagon trails into the Far West. Four years later, Congress instructed Lt. Edward Fitzgerald Beale to mark a route between New Mexico and California. His expedition charted a route which would be used by thousands of migrants on their way to California. And was the basis for the roads which would later cross the region, like Route 66. His route linked what are now the cities of Albuquerque, Grants, Winslow and Flagstaff with California.

The 1946 play *The **Winslow *Boy is based on a father’s fight to clear his son’s name after the boy is expelled from Osborne Naval College for stealing a five-shilling postal order.

The play was inspired by an actual event, which set a legal precedent: the case of George Archer-Shee, a cadet at Osborne in 1908, expelled for stealing a postal order from a fellow cadet. His elder brother, Major Martin Archer-Shee, was convinced of his innocence and persuaded his father to engage lawyers. The most respected barrister of the day, Sir Edward Carson, was also persuaded of his innocence and insisted on the case coming to court. On the fourth day of the trial, the Solicitor General, Sir Rufus Isaacs, accepted that Archer-Shee was innocent, and ultimately the family was paid compensation.

The play was adapted for film and television several times, most recently in 1999.

The late Robert Osborne, the genial host of Turner Classic Movies (TCM), had been a minor TV performer with Desilu Studios (including in the pilot episode of “The Beverly Hillbillies”, which was set near the western terminus of Route 66), before Lucille Ball convinced him he had a brighter future in entertainment journalism than in acting.

The acting credits of Donna Douglas, who played Elly May Clampett in “The Beverly Hillbillies”, includes “Route 66” the TV series that ran from October 1960 to March 1964.

Donna Douglas became a realtor and gospel singer after The Beverly Hillbillies ended its nine-year run in 1971. She also appeared in two reunion movies for the show.

The retirement home that Ronald and Nancy Reagan bought in Bel Air, CA is adjacent to Kirkeby, the mansion that was used as the set of “The Beverly Hillbillies”, complete with housing for Elly May’s critters and the cee-ment pond. The Clampetts might have taken Route 66 much of the way from Appalachia to Californy, the place they oughta be, after loading up the truck.

Ronald Wilson Reagan’s three names each had six letters, 6-6-6, leading to speculation in some conservative Christian quarters before he took office in 1981 that he might help bring about Armageddon. When he and Nancy retired after leaving the White House in 1989, their initial street address was 666 St. Cloud Road, Bel-Air, California, but it was quietly changed to 668 at their request.

According to the Book of Revelation, Chapter 13, verse 18, the number of the Beast is 666. Some people take the Satanic associations of 666 so seriously that they actively avoid things related to 666 or the digits 6-6-6. This is known as hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia.

A portion of Revelation 21:4 may be heard near the end of the James Cameron blockbuster Titanic, when a priest recites it at the stern of the doomed liner to passengers gathered there: “…and God shall wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall not be any more, neither sorrow, nor crying, nor shall there be any more pain…”

There are 66 books in the bible. 39 are in the Old Testament, and 27 in the New Testament. At least one church has used the number 66 and matched it to Route 66 with a site called Route 66 Bible – A road trip through the bible.

They refer to the book of Revelation as “The Last Exit”.
