Trivia Dominoes: Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

Scientists who watched dozens of different mammals from rats to elephants relieve themselves found that most of them seem to urinate in the same time frame – around 21 seconds.

The findings, released by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, shed light on the mysterious fluid dynamics of urination and could help engineers build better flow-regulating devices.
evidence: Urination duration: Study finds most mammals need about 21 seconds

*… The ark started movin’, it drifted with the tide.
Them unicorns looked up from the rock and they cried.
And the waters came down and sort of floated them away.
And that’s why you’ll never see a unicorn, to this very day.

You’ll see green alligators and long-necked geese,
Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees,
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you’re born
You’re never gonna see no unicorn.*

‘The Unicorn’ was released as a single in 1967 by The Irish Rovers and rose as high as #7 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was originally written and recorded by Shel Silverstein in 1962. One of the studio musicians who played guitar on the 1967 release was Glen Campbell.

From December 1964 to early March 1965, Glen Campbell was a touring member of the Beach Boys, filling in for Brian Wilson, playing bass guitar and singing falsetto harmonies.

Campbell came from Arkansas, and briefly lived in Albuquerque before making his way to Hollywood. You know what highway he probably took.

Dennis Wilson was a very heavy drinker who drowned while drunk. Carl Wilson was a very heavy smoker who died of lung cancer.

Their brother Brian Wilson was a legendary drug user, and he is still alive.

I’m sending this from Phoenix, where John McCain, who died of glioblastoma, a brain cancer, was just transported to the capitol building this morning where he will lie in state. In yesterday’s election here, Martha Elizabeth McSally (born March 22, 1966) is an American politician serving as the U.S. Representative for Arizona’s 2nd congressional district. A retired military officer, McSally served in the United States Air Force from 1988 to 2010 and rose to the rank of colonel. One of the highest-ranking female pilots in the history of the Air Force, McSally was the first American woman to fly in combat following the 1991 lifting of the prohibition on female combat pilots.

For more than 2,000 years, the Hohokam people occupied the land that would become Phoenix. The Hohokam created roughly 135 miles (217 kilometers) of irrigation canals, making the desert land arable. Paths of these canals would later become used for the modern Arizona Canal, Central Arizona Project Canal, and the Hayden-Rhodes Aqueduct.

The Chicago Seven (originally Chicago Eight) were seven defendants—Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, David Dellinger, Tom Hayden, Rennie Davis, John Froines, and Lee Weiner—charged by the federal government with conspiracy, inciting to riot, and other charges related to anti-Vietnam War and countercultural protests that took place in Chicago, Illinois, on the occasion of the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Bobby Seale, the eighth man charged, had his trial severed during the proceedings, lowering the number of defendants from eight to seven.

Seale was eventually sentenced to four years in prison for contempt of court, although this ruling was later reversed.

After a federal trial resulting in both acquittals and convictions, followed by appeals, and reversals, some of the seven defendants were finally convicted, although all of the convictions were reversed.

The movie Eight Men Out (1988) depicted the scandal surrounding the 1919 World Series and those Chicago White Sox players accused of purposely throwing the Series against the Cincinnati Reds.

The movie Field of Dreams (1989] depicted one man’s journey to ease the pain of that team and some baseball fans. He built it, and they came. And they played ball again.

The 1919 World Series was one of four Fall Classics to be decided in a best-of-nine format, rather than the more common best-of-seven. The other 3 years were 1903, 1920, and 1921. The 1903 Series is considered to be the first series of the ‘modern’ era of baseball. In that series, the American League champions Boston Americans defeated the National League champions Pittsburgh Pirates, five games to three.

The Pirates played their home games in Exposition Park in Allegheny City, which is now part of the City of Pittsburgh. Due to overflow crowds at the games, a new ground rule was instituted for the series. If a batted ball rolled under a rope in the outfield that held spectators back, a ‘ground-rule triple’ would be scored. Seventeen ground-rule triples were hit in the four games played at the stadium.

A ground rule double is a baseball rule that awards of two bases from the time of pitch to all baserunners including the batter-runner, as a result of the ball leaving play after being hit fairly and leaving the field under a condition of the ground rules in effect at the field where the game is being played. An automatic double is the term used to refer to a fairly hit ball leaving the field in circumstances that do not merit a home run, as described in Major League Baseball rules. The automatic double (or rule-book double) is quite often mistakenly called a ground rule double.

If you order a “double-double” at Tim’s, you get a coffee with two shots of cream and two hits of sugar.

The Double C Diner is at 612 Rte 66 in Moriarty NM, wheras Double C Cowboy Country in Ottumwa IA is a clothing store dedicated to providing Ottumwa with quality western wear and home decor.

In bra sizes there is no such size a double C. It goes straight from a C cup to a D cup.

Moriary, NM is one of the world capitals of soaring, and its municipal airport houses the US Southwest Soaring Museum. The birthplace of the hobby in the US is, however, Harris Hill in Elmira, New York, home of Schweizer Aircraft, founded by brothers Paul, William, and Ernest Schweizer. The site was featured in the Disney film The Boy Who Flew With Condors.

In 1972, Southwest Airlines had to sell one of their four Boeing 737s to cover payroll. They continued their 4-aircraft schedule with only 3 aircraft. The ‘fast turnaround’ of aircraft on the ground was invented to allow the schedule to work. The airline currently has 734 aircraft (all of them Boeing 737’s) but still makes the ‘fast turnaround’ part of the Southwest business model.

The two current refit Boeing 747s which serve as Air Force One first entered service in 1990. The presidential aircraft are due for replacement, but cost has been a major issue. Last year, the U.S. Air Force agreed to purchase two undelivered 747-8 Intercontinentals from Boeing, which is storing them in the Mojave Desert to prevent corrosion. The planes were bought by but never delivered to Transaero, a bankrupt airline from (wait for it…) Russia.

Aeroflot was the world’s largest airline when it was the flag carrier of the Soviet Union. The backbone of its fleet in the postwar years was the Lisunov Li-2, a license-built version of the DC-3. It was also the only operator of the supersonic Tupolev Tu-144 “Concordski”.

The Tupolev Tu-144 first flew in 1968. A total of 16 were built. At the 1973 Paris Air Show, the second production model crashed at Goussainville, Val-d’Oise and killed all six crew and eight people on the ground.

The Paris Air Show is one of the largest air shows in the world. The latest was the 52nd Air Show, held on June 19-25 in 2017. It was attended by 3,450 journalists, 142,000 professionals and 180,000 general public visitors.

The show was established in 1909 and was interrupted by both World Wars. It has been held every odd year since 1949 at Paris–Le Bourget Airport in north Paris, France. The 2019 show will be held from June 17 to June 23.

Paris Springs Junction MO is a very tiny community, not even a village on Route 66. It has the re-created 1930s Sinclair Gay Parita Service station and the Route 66 Gay Parita Store and Cafe.
There are also two vintage garages there, the Cobblestone Garage and the Paris Springs Garage.
