Bob Dole’s right arm was paralyzed after he was hit by machine-gun fire in WWII. He often carried a pen in his right hand to signal that he could not shake hands with that arm.
Although Kaiser Wilhem II (in exile) espoused approval of Jews from Europe, upon hearing of the level of persecution being committed by Nazi Germany, he stated, “For the first time, I am ashamed to be a German.”
WWII did not start with Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland in 1939; that was a European conflict. Nor did it start with the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1931; that was an Asian conflict. It truly became a “world” war when the US entered in 1941 and engaged enemies in both Europe and Asia.
The famous quote “We have awakened a sleeping giant” upon the bombing of Pearl Harbor and America’s entry into the war is attributed to Yamamoto but is most likely original to the screenwriter of the movie Tora! Tora! Tora!. It does not appear in any of Yamamoto’s known writings or contemporary accounts; the closest quote to appear translates loosely as “There is no pride in winning a battle with a sleeping enemy”.
Isoroku (meaning “56”, his father’s age at his birth) Yamamoto (who actually was pessimistic about Japan’s chances of winning a protracted war; the movie quote is accurate in spirit if not in fact) was killed when the Mitsubishi G4M “Betty” bomber he was using to inspect the IJN’s forward positions was shot down in the Solomons, in an extreme long-range mission flown by a squadron of US P-38’s. Pilot Rex Barber, who got the kill shot, was among the many P-38 pilots who benefited from learning long-range fuel management techniques from civilian Charles Lindbergh, who himself is unofficially credited with a kill of a Japanese “Sonia” observation plane during such a demonstration in the P-38.
In the “Oedipus Wrecks” segment of the film New York Stories, Woody Allen’s mother was played by Mae Questel, best known as the cartoon voice of both Olive Oyl and Betty Boop.
The “Oedipus Wrecks” segment was generally well-received by critics, as was the Martin Scorsese-directed “Life Lessons”. Francis Ford Coppola’s “Life Without Zoë”, however, was almost universally panned.
Both Martin Scorsese and Sarah, Duchess of York, were credited as producers of the recent biopic Young Victoria, starring Emily Blunt, Miranda Richardson, Paul Bettany and Mark Strong.
Ken Ludwig, one of America’s most popular living playwrights, is the author of a series of comedies and farces that have played Broadway (his Lend me a Tenor is currently in revival on Broadway and is being adapted to a musical) and also smaller venues. He often concentrates on theaters and actors. One of his most successful plays, Leading Ladies, is about two actors who try to swindle a rich woman from York, PA, by pretending to be her long-lost nieces.
York, PA is the production site of Hershey’s York Peppermint Patty, and is also the home of York Barbell Company and the USA Weightlifting Hall of Fame. Its Harley-Davidson engine plant has the most employees of any location in the company, not its Milwaukee base.
York, Pa. was briefly the American capital during the Revolution, when the Continental Congress was forced to flee Philadelphia due to the advance of British troops.
One distinction shared by songwriter George M. Cohan, St. Thomas More, horror star Bela Lugosi and World War 1 hero Alvin York is that some actor has won an Oscar for playing each of them.
It’s come to that now, has it?
The M247 Sergeant York, based on the M48 Patton tank, was the name the US Army would have given to the DIVAD anti-aircraft system developed in the late 1970’s if it hadn’t succumbed to cost overruns and a host of engineering problems.
Harry Morgan, more famous for his portrayal of Colonel Sherman Potter on MASH*, had an uncredited role as a U.S. Senator in Patton.
Harry Morgan at one point had been a regular in more TV series than any other actor: **December Bride, Pete and Gladys, the Richard Boone Show, Kentucky Jones, Dragnet, Hec Ramsey, The D.A., MASH, AfterMASH, **and Blacke’s Magic. Later, Robert Urich surpassed him.
Henry Morgan is one of the few pirates to have had a happy ending to his career. He eventually retired from murdering random strangers left and right and ended up with a knighthood and appointment as governor of Jamaica for his troubles. He died in London, of natural causes - another rare event where pirates are concerned.
Henry Morgan was a mid-20th Century humorist and frequent panelist on the quiz show “I’ve Got a Secret.” Because his name was registered first with the Actor’s Guild, another actor named Henry Morgan was forced to adopt the name “Harry Morgan” when he appeared on television.
However, Harry Morgan had appeared in movies as Henry Morgan, and for a few years was actually billed as Henry “Harry” Morgan.
Morgan Freeman has played a murderous drug dealer, God, the President of the United States and Nelson Mandela, among other roles.
The gunfight at the OK Corral was a legendary western showdown in in Tombstone, Arizona, where the Earp brothers – Wyatt, Morgan, and Virgil – aided by Doc Holliday fought the Clanton brothers and their gang. Three of the Clantons were killed; the Earps were exonerated because they were acting in their official capacity as sheriff. The details of the fight are still controversial/
In Ohio, a sheriff is responsible for patrolling the roads in unincorporated areas of his or her county, providing security in the county courthouse and county offices, transporting county prisoners and running the county jail. He is elected (or not) by the voters every four years. In larger counties, the sheriff may have hundreds of deputies.
