Trivia Dominoes: Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

A vocal group based on the Clancy Brothers appears in the Coen Bros. movie Inside Llewyn Davis, based on the NYC folk (not rock and roll) scene in the early Sixties. They sing this: Inside Llewyn Davis: The Auld Triangle - YouTube

Clive Davis, longtime record executive, has adopted a stretch of I-684 in Westchester County as part of the Adopt-a-Highway program

In 2004, American Somoa’s International Calling Code of 684 became its area code under the North American Numbering Plan

Clive of India was one of the founders of British India. Although he was working for the East India Company, he successfully drove out French traders and laid the foundation for the eventual British Raj.

In the process, he acquired a tremendous personal fortune, which triggered numerous parliamentary inquiries.

Author Clive Cussler is the founder and chairman of NUMA, the National Underwater and Marine Agency, which has discovered more than 60 shipwreck sites and numerous other notable underwater wrecks. NUMA has located or attempted to locate the USS Akron (ZRS-4, the dirigible), John Paul Jones’ USS Bonhomme Richard (1765), RMS Carpathia (rescued 705 survivors from Titanic’s lifeboats), as well as mountaineers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine who were lost on Mount Everest in 1924.

It was George Mallory, on being asked why he wanted to climb Mount Everest, who answered, “Because it is there.”

The P.R. Mallory Company was a manufacturer of “dry cell” batteries. Its original batteries were mercury-based, and the company initially catered primarily to industrial and military customers. In 1964, Mallory introduced an alkaline battery, which was named “Duracell,” and began to market these batteries directly to consumers.

The company itself was renamed Duracell when it was sold in 1978, and has changed hands several times since then (owners have included Kraft, Gillette, and Procter & Gamble). Duracell is currently owned by Berkshire Hathaway, which purchased the company from P&G in 2016.

I call shenanigans. This was played 9 minutes before Northern Piper’s play off of #42861 and this is now the fourth time one of my trivium was skipped.

You’re right Saint Cad. It was Northern Piper’s error in 42,863 and s/he should have checkedafter making the post. I saw another error recently, too, but don’t recall who made it. People are getting sloppy. Let’s tighten it up.

Interstate 684 is a short, under 30 mile spur route in NY and CT connecting I-84 with I-287 and the Hutchinson River Parkway. It opened in October 1968. The highway is almost entirely in New York state and it only clips a tiny part of the Connecticut panhandle, a boundary irregularity that is the result of territorial disputes in the late 17th century that culminated with New York giving up its claim to this area, whose residents considered themselves part of Connecticut.

The New York - Connecticut border was established by the British government after it took over the New Netherlands colony (and renamed it New York). The British land claim for the New Haven colony went all the way west to the Pacific, while the Dutch claim had run east to the Connecticut River. The British ruling established a common border approximately paralleling the Hudson River, placing its watershed in New York, except for what is now the tab at the southwest corner of Connecticut. That was the result of special pleading by the villagers of Greenwich, who claimed their historical associations had been with New Haven and not New Amsterdam.

Agreed. I can also recall a number of instances where this has happened recently.

The Erie Canal runs from the Hudson River near Albany to the Niagara River near Buffalo. Completed in 1825, the original length of the canal was 363 miles. The canal passes through 34 locks and has an elevation difference of about 565 feet.

The name of the Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Lake Erie (CG-70), commissioned in 1993, honors Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s decisive victory over the British fleet in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. She was the first U.S. Navy ship to be commissioned in Hawaii.

Hazard is an old English dice game, probably the fore-runner of Craps. It is mentioned in Chaucer’s “Canterbury Tales” written in the 14th century, and was very popular in English gaming clubs in the 18th century.

The etymology of the name “Hazard” is not clear, but it is possible it comes from Spanish or Arabic. The word “hazard” meaning risk or danger likely comes from the dice game.

There is no such Hazzard County, Georgia — it is a fictional place, for The Dukes of Hazzard. There is, however, a city called Hazard, Kentucky, about 115 miles SE of Lexington. It is named after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry.

The song “Night Shift”, an obituary of Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, was originally recorded in 1984, and became the first hit attained by the Commodores after Lionel Richie’s departure from the group. It was also their biggest hit after Richie’s departure, peaking at number three for the week of April 20 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and UK Singles Chart. The song features a lead vocal from drummer Walter Orange, who had sung lead years earlier on “Brick House”. Lionel Richie’s replacement, J.D. Nicholas, sings the second verse and then Orange and Nicholas share lead vocals on the remaining choruses.

Night Shift (1982) is a comedy film directed by Ron Howard and starring Michael Keaton, Henry Winkler, and Diane Chambers. It was Keaton’s first starring role, and it also had a young Kevin Costner in a minor supporting role billed as “Frat Boy #1”.

Although Michael Keaton was the first actor to play Batman in a modern, serious-themed film based on the DC Comics character (1989’s Batman), he wasn’t the first ever (and no, Adam West in the 1966 film based on the comic TV show wasn’t either). Lewis Wilson played him in the 1943 B&W serial Batman, and Robert Lowery played him in the 1949 sequel series Batman and Robin.

In thr Happy Days episode My Favorite Orkan, space alien Mork, played by Robin Williams, watches The Andy Griffith Show and asks Ritchie Cunningham “I like that boy Opie, but why does Earth boy have Martian name?”

Randall Cunningham played quarterback in the NFL for sixteen seasons, primarily with the Philadelphia Eagles. Randall’s older brother, Sam “Bam” Cunningham, had been a fullback with the New England Patriots in the 1970s.

Randall has two children who have both become champion high jumpers: son Randall II (who currently competes for USC) and daughter Vashti (who competes professionally).

Glenn Cunningham was a Kansas farmboy who went on to become a world-class middle distance runner, competing in both the 1932 and 1936 Olympics. When Cunningham was 8, his lower legs were badly burned in a fire which killed his brother. Despite losing all the toes on one foot and all the skin on both lower legs, Cunningham regained the use of his legs after two years of being bedridden.

The mile run at the University of Kansas Relays is named after Cunningham.

The 1932 Olympics were held in Los Angeles, as were in 1984 Olympics. The 2028 Olympics will be held there as well.

In both the cases of the 1984 and 2028 Olympic Games, LA got them because no other city wanted them. The main venue will be the original coliseum that hosted the 1932 and 1984 Games.
