Panther is a versatile word that can refer to different leopards, jaguars, or mountain lions. It can refer to a melanistic or black cat. That’s why the phrase “black panther” is common. In Africa and Asia, panther refers to leopards. In North America, it refers to mountain lion. In South America, it refers to jaguars.

The former name for the giraffe, and the constellation named for the giraffe, are variations of camelopard in reference to its shape (camel-like) and its color and spots (leopard-like).

Formerly known as “Dr. G. Raffe” in 1950s print advertisements for Children’s Bargaintown, Geoffrey the Giraffe evolved in name and appearance over the next decade to become the official mascot of the renamed Toys “R” Us. In 2017, the company sponsored the live camera broadcast for April the Giraffe, which helped support giraffe conservation and awareness.

Fresh Prince of Bel Air’s Geoffrey the butler has had quite the past. Born in England and educated at Oxford, Geoffrey Barbara Butler was a gold medal winning runner, a butler to Queen Elizabeth (he has her face tatooed on his butt and a butler to Led Zeppelin before being hired by the Banks’s family.

In the 1980s and 1990s, there were two unrelated celebrities who shared the name Brett Butler.

One Brett Butler is an actress, comedian, and writer. She was best known for her comedy series on ABC, Grace Under Fire, which ran from 1993 to 1998. During the show’s run, Butler struggled with substance abuse, which ultimately led to the cancellation of the show. More recently, Butler has had recurring roles on Anger Management and The Walking Dead.

The other Brett Butler was an outfielder for a number of Major League Baseball teams from 1981 through 1997, including the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, San Francisco Giants, and Los Angeles Dodgers. Butler stole 558 bases in his career (making him 25th on the all-time list), but he also was caught stealing 257 times (making him 3rd all-time).

The title of that TV show came from a quote attributed to Ernest Hemingway: “Courage is grace under fire.” Sometimes the quote uses “pressure” instead of “fire”.

Gertrude Stein was not a fan of Hemingway. She would sometimes address her small dog: “Play Hemingway ! " Be fierce!”

The Hemingway Daiquiri is made with rum, lime juice, maraschino liqueur, and grapefruit juice. It is served in a double cocktail glass.

The American actor Corey Stoll played Ernest Hemingway in the 2011 Woody Allen fantasy comedy Midnight in Paris, a troubled Congressman in the first season of the American version of the political thriller House of Cards, and Buzz Aldrin in the recent Neil Armstrong biopic First Man. Stoll is a graduate of Oberlin College.

Oberlin College was founded in in 1833 and is the oldest coeducational liberal arts college in the United States. In 1835 Oberlin became one of the first colleges in the United States to admit African Americans, and in 1837 became the first to admit women (other than Franklin College’s brief experiment in the 1780’s).

The claim that King Edward IV was illegitimate led to an alternate theory of the proper inheritance of the Throne of England. Edith Maud Abney-Hastings, Lady of Moira born 1833, is one of these so-called Yorkist Pretender Monarchs.

Yorkshire, formally know as the County of York, is one of largest counties of the United Kingdom. Some of the bloodiest battles on English soil took place in Yorkshire during the War of the Roses…

In Wisconsin there are at least five towns either called York or with the word York in the entire name.

The Duke of York’s claim to the Throne of England came not from his agnatic descent from King Edward III, but from the marriage of Anne de Mortimer, Lady of March, to Richard of Conisburgh (her first cousin twice removed). That marriage may have had little to do with dynastic bonding since both Anne and Richard had older brothers alive at the time of their marriage. But these older brothers died heirless, so Anne’s son Richard Plantagenet ended up inheriting the Duchy of York, the Earldom of March, and (though he was killed at the Battle of Wakefield before he could be crowned) the Kingdom of England.

Baseball pitcher Cy Young has more career wins for the Boston Red Sox than any other pitcher — except for Roger Clemens. They both are tied with the most career wins, 192. The pitcher with the next most career wins is Tim Wakefield with 186.

After the 1996 season, Roger “Rocket” Clemens left Boston as a free agent, claiming he wanted to play closer to his Houston home. He signed with the Toronto Blue Jays.

At least that was in time for the creation of a new Beanie Baby, Rocket the Blue Jay.

The Hockey Hall of Fame, in Toronto, officially recognizes nine dynasties:

Maple syrup is made from the sap of maple trees which is boiled to concentrate it. It takes 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup. Sap used to be gathered from maple trees in buckets, but today most commercial producers connect all their trees with plastic tubing to a vacuum pump which sucks the sap into one central tank.

The maple tree (Acer saccharum) is in Tribe Acereae of Subfamily Hippocastanoideae. That subfamily contains one other Tribe: Hippocastaneae, which includes horse-chestnut.
