Trivia Dominoes: Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

John, Ted and Robert Kennedy all served as United States Senators - John and Ted from Massachusetts, and Robert from New York. John and Robert were Navy veterans; Ted was an Army veteran.

Joseph Patrick Kennedy (1888-1969) married Rose Elizabeth Fitzgerald in 1914 when he was 26 years old. During WWI he met and got acquainted with Assistant Secretary of the Navy Franklin Delano Roosevelt. During the Great Depression, Kennedy increased his net worth by investing most of his money in real estate. In 1929, his fortune was estimated to be $4 million ($58.4 million today), and by 1935, his wealth had increased to $180 million ($3.29 billion today).

John “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald was a popular figure in Boston culture and politics in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. He served two terms as mayor of Boston, held a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives for 3 terms (and part of a fourth), and threw out the first pitch at the first Red Sox game ever held at Fenway Park.

Fitzgerald had a rivalry, at one point, with another Democratic politician in Boston, Patrick “P.J.” Kennedy, though the two eventually became allies. Fitzgerald’s daughter, Rose, married Kennedy’s son, Joseph.

Joseph P. Kennedy was the first chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. President F.D. Roosevelt allegedly said he appointed Kennedy to the SEC because it takes a thief to catch a thief.

Joseph P. Kennedy Jr., who seems to have been the son being groomed for the Presidency, was killed in 1944 in Operation Aphrodite, when the explosives-laden that B-24 he was flying and was supposed to have bailed out of before its impact under radio control detonated prematurely.

Aphrodite is a Greek goddess often associated with love, pleasure, and procreation. Symbols associated with Aphrodite are roses, doves, and swans. Although Aphrodite was worshiped as a warrior goddess, she was also the patron goddess of prostitutes.

At approximately 18,500 units – including over 4,600 manufactured by Ford Motor Company – the Consolidated B-24 Liberator holds records as the world’s most produced bomber, heavy bomber, multi-engine aircraft, and American military aircraft in history. The B-24 could fly faster than the B-17, which is why, after an initial trial, the two planes never flew together in mixed formation, (according to Tom Philo on his Great B-17-B-24 Controversy blog). Very few B-24s were used in Operation Aphrodite — mostly B-17 and PB4Y bombers were used, and of 14 missions flown, none resulted in the successful destruction of a target. Many aircraft lost control and crashed or were shot down by flak, and many pilots were killed including Joe Kennedy in his B-24.

The number 10[sup]24[/sup] is called septillion. This may confuse since septillion should involve a factor of seven. In fact in 1484 Nicolas Chuquet, in his article* Le Triparty en la Science des Nombres* did define septyllion as 10[sup]6×7[/sup], but this unwieldy scaling came into disfavor and even the British have now generally adopted the “short scale.”

The British neo-progressive rock band Marillion was formed in late 1978, and was originally named “Silmarillion,” taking their name from the J.R.R. Tolkien book of the same name. The band shortened its name to Marillion in 1980 or 1981, though reports differ as to whether or not the change was due to any potential legal conflict with the Tolkien estate.

The band has seen numerous lineup changes over the years. Marillion’s sound can be generally classified in two eras: a more progressive-rock sound when Fish was the band’s singer (up through 1988), and a more contemporary sound under singer Steve Hogarth.

A tiny garage-shop computer firm in Cupertino decided to use Apple as its name, partly as a tribute to their favorite band, the Beatles, who operated Apple Records and Apple Corps Ltd. In 1978 the tiny computer company was sued by the music giant and, to avoid further legal conflict they came to an agreement: Apple Corps Ltd. would not operate in the computer business; Apple Computer would not operate in the music business.

Eventually that needed to be renegotiated.

The Gala apple, which originated in New Zealand, is now the bestselling apple variety in the US, where it overtook the Red Delicious, and in the UK, where it replaced the Cox. In Canada, the Macintosh is the bestseller, and Gala is at number 2. In Japan, Fuji apples continue to be the unrivaled best-seller.

The Red Delicious apple was first recognized in Madison County, Iowa, in 1880 and is from Peru, Iowa. Peru, Iowa is pronounced PEE-roo.

In Greek mythology and legend, Paris was the son of Priam, the king of Troy.

In the legends, the goddesses Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite quarreled over the golden Apple of Discord (meant to be given to the most beautiful goddess), they went to Zeus to arbitrate. Zeus, knowing that any answer would get him into trouble, appointed Paris to reach a decision.

Paris was unable to decide based on the goddesses’ beauty alone, and each of the three then offered him bribes. Aphrodite offered Paris the love of Helen (the most beautiful woman in the world), and thus, Paris awarded the apple to Aphrodite.

Helen, however, was already married to King Menelaus of Sparta; Paris raided Menelaus’s house to take Helen, thus (according to the legend) leading to the Trojan War.

Paris of Troy had a second cousin, Aeneas the Dardanian, who also fought at Troy, but survived, went West, had a number of adventures, and eventually helped found Roman civilization. His desertion of Queen Dido of Carthage after spending a year as her husband was the reason for the rivalry that eventualy led to the Punic Wars.

Actor Troy Donahue was married and divorced four times, but his only child came from a brief sexual fling. He only found out about his son Sean in the early 1980’s when he ran into the woman again. As he recalled in 1984:

She walked over and introduced herself and I remembered that we had been together four or five times in L.A. in 1969. Nothing serious. Just fun and games. She said, “I’m glad I saw you. I’ve always wanted to tell you about something. Look over there, Troy.” I looked and across the room I saw a 13-year-old spitting image of what I looked like when I was young. “This is your son, Sean,” she said. “He’s known all his life that you are his father.”… I see him every couple of weeks now.

Troy Donahue was born in 1937 and died of heart attack in 2001. His birth name was Merle Johnson, Jr. Donahue was given his stage name by Hollywood press agent Henry Willson. Willson also invented the stage names of Rock Hudson and Tab Hunter.

In 1974, Donahue had a bit part in The Godfather: Part II. The name of his character was Merle Johnson.

How Boston architect William Rawn got started in the business is an open book, one that he never dreamed would be so popular.

Rawn designed the Greek Revival-style farmhouse in Amherst that Pulitzer Prize-winning author Tracy Kidder wrote about in his book ″House,″ published in 1985.

″House″ is the story of how attorney Jonathan Souweine and his wife, Judith, working with Rawn and Apple Corps builders of Ashfield, built the Souweine’s dream house.

Boston’s 1975 debut album sold over 15 million copies and was the top-selling debut until Hootie and the Blowfish’s Cracked Rear View in 1995.
