In The Matrix, computer hacker Thomas Anderson, soon to become Neo (Keanu Reeves), is told by Morpheus to “follow the White Rabbit.” He meets a girl with a White Rabbit tattoo and impulsively decides to follow her to a nightclub, setting his adventure in motion. The White Rabbit is almost certainly an allusion to the Lewis Carroll character from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, as Neo, like Alice, learns that the world was not at all as he thought it was.
There have been many interpretations of “Alice in Wonderland”, one of the more interesting ones starring Sammy Davis Jr. as the Cheshire Cat, and Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble as the Caterpillar.
The NAACP Image Award is an annual awards ceremony presented by the U.S.-based National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to honor outstanding performances in film, television, music, and literature. Similar to other awards, like the Oscars and the Grammys, the over 40 categories of the Image Awards are voted on by the award organization’s members (in this case, NAACP members). Anthony Anderson, star of “Black-ish”, has hosted the last 6 awards programs.
W.E.B. Du Bois (William Edward Burghardt Du Bois) was one of the organizers of the NAACP, which was created in 1910. In 1945, he was one of three delegates from the NAACP to San Francisco when the United Nations was formed.
The site of the UN headquarters in Manhattan, formerly the site of Turtle Bay, which was filled with slaughterhouses and tenement buildings, is outside US jurisdiction. While the complex, opened in 1952, was being built, the UN used the Sperry Corporation offices in Lake Success, Long Island, after several other temporary sites, including the 1939 (and later 1964) World’s Fair site in Flushing Meadows.
The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago is a leftover from the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, Century of Progress. It was the Art Pavilion, and after the fair ended, it was turned into the Museum of Natural History, until 1933 when it became the Museum of Science and Industry.
One of the famous names associated with New York City’s Museum of Natural History was the dinosaur hunter of the Gobi Desert, Roy Chapman Andrews, who was one of the inspirations for Indiana Jones.
The newest national park in the US is Indiana Dunes National Park, on the shores of Lake Michigan. It was “promoted” to that status, from National Lakeshore, in February 2019. That makes Indiana the 29th state to have a national park, but with a long way to go to catch California with 8 of them.
Henry Jones, Sr., the father of Indiana Jones, was portrayed by Sean Connery in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Connery was only 12 years older than Harrison Ford, who played his son, but one reason for Connery being chosen was that James Bond was an inspiration for Indiana Jones.
Indiana is one of 8 states that border at least one of the Great Lakes. The others are Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. Michigan borders 4 of the 5 Great Lakes.
