Trivia Dominoes: Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

Before entering politics (and eventually becoming governor of Wisconsin), Oscar Rennebohm was a pharmacist. Rennebohm operated a Rexall pharmacy in Madison, Wisconsin, and later was president of the Wisconsin Pharmaceutical Association, and served as a regent for the University of Wisconsin.

The pharmacy school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is named after Rennebohm.

(When I attended the University of Wisconsin in the 1980s, there was a joke that the statue on the top of the Capitol Dome, which depicts a woman with her right arm outstretched, was actually a statue of Mrs. Rennebohm, pointing the way to the nearest location of a Rennebohm pharmacy. )

When Oscar Wilde arrived in New York in 1882, he supposedly said, when asked at Customs if he had anything to declare, “I have nothing to declare except my genius.” There’s no evidence to prove that Wilde said this line, which didn’t appear in print until 1912. Many of his remarks were seized upon by the press in 1882 and widely reported, often immediately.
There is also no mention of it in interviews given by Wilde, including almost a hundred given to American journalists in 1882. When the line did appear, it was in a biography by Arthur Ransome, who was born in 1884 and never met Wilde.

San Francisco’s Wilde Reservoir Overlook is on the eastern edge of McLaren Park at the intersection of Mansell Street and Visitacion Avenue. It was completed and opened to the public in 1981.

A cercle is the second level administrative unit in Mali. Mali is divided into eight régions and one capital district (Bamako); the régions are subdivided into 49 cercles.

On most phones, the 8 key is associated with the letters T, U and V, but on the BlackBerry it is the key for B, N and X.

Thomas Braden Sr. was the author of Eight is Enough. The last name was changed to Bradford for the TV show.

His son Thomas Braden iii died in 1994:

The Black Canyon of the Gunnison River, located in western Colorado, is a steep and narrow canyon, about 50 miles in length. In that span of 50 miles, the Gunnison River drops an average of 43 feet per mile, which is six times more than the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. The Black Canyon is so named because some parts of the gorge receive only 33 total minutes of sunlight per day.

Comic strip writer/artist Milton Caniff gained fame for his action-adventure newspaper comic, Terry and the Pirates. Though he had created the strip, Caniff did not own the rights to it (it was owned by the Chicago Tribune - New York News syndicate), and, in 1946, Caniff left Terry and the Pirates, to start a new strip.

Caniff had been able to negotiate a contract with Field Enterprises to syndicate the new strip, to which Caniff would retain the rights. Thus was born Steve Canyon, another action-adventure newspaper comic, which ran from early 1947, until Caniff’s death in 1988.

Millton Cross was perhaps the most prestigious name in American radio. He started as an announcer and singer in 1921, and became the host of Texaco’s Saturday live Metropolitan Opera broadcast in 1933. He only missed three broadcasts in 43 years, until his death in 1975.

Benedetto Croce, the Italian philosopher (whose last name means “cross”) was nominated for the Nobel prize in Literature 16 times, between 1929 and 1952.

Singer-songwriter Jim Croce had eight songs reach the top 40 on the Billboard U.S. charts; of those eight, four of them charted after Croce’s death in a plane crash in September, 1973.

Those four songs were “I Got a Name,” “Time in a Bottle,” “I’ll Have to Say I Love You in a Song,” and “Workin’ at the Car Wash Blues.”

“Time After Time” was one of the old standard that occasionally popped up in the early rock chartes, when Frankie Ford used it to follow up on his famous “Sea Cruise” in 1960. It was written by Sammy Cahn and Julie Styne 13 years before, for Frank Sinatra

Famed songwriter and composer Jule Styne had been a vocal coach for 20th Century Fox. But Darryl F. Zanuck fired him, because vocal coaching was “a luxury, and we’re cutting out those luxuries,” and told him he should write songs, because “that’s forever.”
