Kilometer Zero of the French highway system is located in the square just outside the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, where you will often see people dressed up as hunchbacks for the tourists.
Well, you should see it when you get the chance! I really liked it. ![]()
There have been ten noteworthy steamships named Paris, after the French capital city, the first of which was built in 1852 for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway, and wrecked in 1863.
The South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, California in Orange County is the US’ highest-grossing shopping mall, with revenue of over $1.5 billion per year spent during 24 million shopper visits. It was the location of the first Nordstrom’s store outside the Pacific Northwest. It also includes Saks, Bloomingdale’s, and Macy’s outlets as anchor tenants.
A common legend in the retail trade about Nordstrom’s, celebrated for its eagerness to please customers, is that a staffer once accepted the return of a four unused snow tires without a receipt, paying the customer for their value… even though Nordstrom’s doesn’t even sell snow tires.
Seven states (WY, CO, NH, VT, NM, NC, KY) have no restrictions on the use of metal-studded snow tires. Nine others (HI, AL, FL, MS, LA, MN, WI, IL, TX) do not permit them whatsoever. All others have partial restrictions on their use.
In 2000, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration noted an abnormally high number of accidents involving Ford Explorers using Firestone tires – specifically, “tread separation” on the tires, leading to rollover accidents with the tall SUVs. Each company attempted to focus blame on the other, and Bridgestone/Firestone severed its 100-year-old relationship as a supplier to Ford.
Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone, Thomas Edison, and John Burroughs were close friends who often took “motor caravan” vacation trips together, helping modernize the American conception of vacationing. They nicknamed themselves “The Four Vagabonds” (NOT a band name).
The name “Ford Prefect” in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy was taken from the name of a British automobile, a joke that was lost on US audiences.
Warren G. Harding also took several motor trips with Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. Harding, who served in the White House from 1921-23, is considered by most historians to be among the worst Presidents of the United States. Alice Roosevelt Longworth, daughter of Theodore Roosevelt and a longtime observer of Washington society, famously remarked, “Harding wasn’t a bad man; he was just a slob.”
Three major rumors accompany the legend of Warren G. Harding: 1) that he was of mixed ancestry through a great-grandmother who crossed the color line, 2) that he fathered an illegitimate daughter while president, and 3) that he was poisoned by his wife Florence Kling (DeWolfe) Harding. While none are conclusively proven or disproven, few scholars take the poisoning rumor seriously, though his paternity of Elizabeth Britton (daughter of Nan, who wrote a tell all book about her affair with Harding) is considered more likely than not, and his alleged black ancestry (a rumor that was very prevalent in his own lifetime) has had defenders and opponents for almost a century. One African-American family in Ohio who claim to be his relatives have claimed an oral history of their relationship to him for generations now.
Actress Barbara Britton played Laura Petrie in Head of the Family, the pilot for what would become the Dick Van Dyke Show. Carl Reiner, who would play Alan Brady in the series, originally cast himself as Rob Petrie, but was convinced to recast the part by Sheldon Leonard.
Carl Reiner reprised the role of Alan Brady for an episode of Mad About You, a show that also used several members of the Laugh In cast (Joanne Worley, Arte Johnson, Henry Gibson, Gary Owens and Goldie Hawn) for a dream sequence.
Before joining Laugh-In, Jo Anne Worley appeared off-Broadway in The Mad Show, a selection of various Mad Magazine articles turned into skits. The cast also included Paul Sand, Linda Lavin, and Richard Libertini
While Linda Lavin is best known for her TV work, she is a serious stage actress, having been ominated for five Tony Awards, with one win–1987 Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play - “Broadway Bound”
Tony Blair, as a child, lived with his family for several years in Australia. He was the first Labour Party leader elected to three terms as British Prime Minister, succeeding John Major, a Conservative, and succeeded by his Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, who left office earlier this year. Blair was also the first Prime Minister to have actually been born during Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.
Bonnie Blair won five gold medals and a bronze as an Olympic speedskater. Before Apolo Ohno took the record, at her retirement she was the most medal-laden US winter Olympic athlete ever. In 1994, she and Norway’s Johan Olav Koss, also a highly decorated speedskater, were Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year.
Terry McDermott was the only American to win a gold medal in the 1964 Winter Olympics, in speedskating. He repeated with a silver in 1968, despite the fact he skated late in the day and the ice was all chewed up.
[metro dork nitpick] Actually, the metro was already under construction when Expo 67 was announced in 1962. However, the plan was modified in order to accommodate Expo. The rock excavated from the metro tunnels and the construction of the Décarie Expressway was used to build the islands on which Expo was presented.
(And I thought you’d nail me for misspelling “Ile”.
Counternitpick: Wasn’t Ile Sainte-Helene already there, having been named by Champlain for his wife, except for the Sainte part?)
After breaking through supporting Clint Eastwood in the Secret Service film In the Line of Fire, Dylan McDermott has carved out a career for himself playing more cops on basic-cable drama series, including Dark Blue and The Grid.
[Out of Game]I was at Expo 67. My brother’s high school band played a concert in one of the band shells there.[/OoG]
