Trivia Dominoes: Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

No actor has won Best Actor for their first film role; there are several who have done this as Best Actress (2), Best Supporting Actor (3), and Best Supporting Actress (7). The two who come the closest are F. Murray Abraham, who had four non-extra parts before his win (and no leads) and Goeffrey Rush, who had two.

F. Murray Abraham (Salieri) and Tom Hulce (Mozart) were both nominated for the Best Actor Oscar for Amadeus. Salieri won. The same situation applied to the Broadway stage production–Ian McKellen(Salieri) and Tim Curry (Mozart) were both nominated for the Tony. Salieri won.

Dr. John H. Watson’s British Army orderly, who slung him over a horse and rescued him from the battlefield after he was wounded in battle in Afghanistan, was named Murray. He is not mentioned or seen again in all of Conan Doyle’s writings.

Watson’s private life was the subject of speculation by some Holmes enthusiasts, specifically how many times he was married. His marital status varies and is perhaps inconsistent at different points in the canon, with him- for example- referring to his fiancee or leaving to be married- at least twice. Most Holmes scholars think he was married at least twice, possibly three times during his association with Holmes with some pointing out he possibly had as many as six wives over the course of the series. It is unknown whether he was a widower or divorced, but given the relative brevity of his unions more likely the latter.

Henry VIII to six wives he was wedded
One died, one survived, two divorced, two beheaded.

To remember the fates of King Henry VIII’s wives, in proper order, just think of this rhyme:

Divorced, beheaded, died,
divorced, beheaded, survived.

Nostradamus’s quatrain predicting the beheading of Louis XV!

Par grand discord la trombe tremblera,
Accord rompu dressant la teste au ciel,
Bouche sanglante dans le sang nagera,
Au sol la face ointe de laict & miel.
~ Nostradamus I.57

By great sound the whirlwind will tremble,
harmony broken lifting its head to sky,
Mouth blood-covered will float in the blood,
on ground the face anointed with milk and honey

Louis Comfort Tiffany was noted for his beautiful stained glass windows, but had remarkable skills in other decorative arts, too. One of his most famous projects was redecorating the White House in 1882 for President Chester Arthur, himself a very stylish gentleman.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s was a novella by Truman Capote published in 1958. After its publication, fellow author Norman Mailer called Capote “The most perfect writer of our generation.” Capote acknowledged the story’s main character, Holly Golightly, was his favorite character from all his works.

Pop-star Tiffany dated Jonathan Knight of New Kids on the Block at the height of their fame in the early 1990s. The relationship didn’t last long due to their hectic schedules, and the fact he’s gay probably didn’t help much either. (Today she’s married to her second husband, an English businessman, and he’s involved with his personal trainer after his Brazilian ex outed him in the tabloids.)

The Eagles’ song Hotel California contains the line Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes bends.

When the Eagles released their first album, most rock critics considered them an inferior version to the group Poco, formed by former Buffalo Springfield guitarist Richie Furay.

Vince Lombardi only lost one playoff game as coach of the Green Bay Packers – to the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1960 NFL Championship Game.

The Vince Lombardi Service Area is the northernmost rest stop on the New Jersey Turnpike, which names them all after notable New Jerseyans. Walt Whitman, Woodrow Wilson, and Molly Pitcher have their names on others, as does ur-treehugger poet Joyce Kilmer, who would probably be offended.

The TV series Room 222 was set at the fictional Walt Whitman High School in Los Angeles.

In the movie Mars Attacks, the invading Martians are finally defeated after hearing a record of Slim Whitman’s yodeling.

In the 1978 film Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, the marauding mutant vegetables are cornered in the parking lot of San Diego Stadium and die from hearing the song “Puberty Love” pumped out of the public address system by hero Mason Dixon.

Jean Dixon alledgedly predicted the assassination of John F. Kennedy in the May 13, 1956 issue of Parade magazine.

Superman’s first case was bringing in the murderer of Jack Kennedy.

George Bernard Shaw’s 1903 play Man and Superman, based on the Don Juan story, includes a Nietzschean debate in Hell between Don Juan and the Devil.
