New Hampshire has the shortest coastline of any US state bordering an ocean/Gulf of Mexico.
New Hampshire also has the shortest border with Canada of any state that has one. All of it is also part of the border of the town of Pittsburg, NH. From 1832 to 1835, Pittsburg was the microstate called the Republic of Indian Stream, but then voted to annex itself to New Hampshire. The Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842 resolved the matter, along with the rest of the US-British territory border all the way to the Rockies.
The towns nearest the New Hampshire-Canadian border crossing are Pittsburg NH (population 869) and Chartierville, Quebec (population 300).
Pittsburg State University is located in Kansas. Its athletic teams bear the unique nickname of Gorillas.
Gorillas have “noseprints” that are unique.
The Gorillaz are the creation of Damon Albarn, of the band Blur, and comic book artist Jamie Hewlett, co creator of Tank Girl. Each Gorillaz album features a different selection of other artists filling out the band.
The fictional members of the band are Stuart ‘2D’ Pot, the somewhat brain damaged lead singer; Murdoc Niccals, the evil bass player who’s responsible for 2D’s brain damage; Russel Hobbs, the demon possessed drummer; and Noodle, the quiet guitarist who was delivered to the studio one day under mysterious circumstances.
Max Raabe und seine Palast Orchester have revived German cabaret music of the Weimar era to surprising success in both Europe and the US. One of the group’s most popular recordings is “Mein Gorilla hat 'ne Villa im Zoo” (“My Gorilla has a Villa in the Zoo”), from the picture Heut kommt’s drauf an starring Hamburg actor/singer Hans Albers.
The Master of Ceremonies in Cabarat sings “If You Could See Her With My Eyes” to an actor in a Gorilla costume. The song is subtitled “The Gorilla Song.”
Brooke Shields was starring on Broadway in Caberet during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The show resumed playing on Thursday, September 13th to about 60 people.
Brooke Shields starred in the famed softcore movie “Blue Lagoon”.
William Daniels played Brooke Shields’ father in Blue Lagoon. At the time he was most famous for playing John Adams in 1776 but gained his greatest fortune (if not fame) for playing Dr. Craig in St. Elsewhere and Mr. Feeney (who worked at John Adams High) in Boy Meets World.
John Adams was the most prominent Founding Father who was not a slaveholder.
John Adams wrote many times in letters and journals that he considered the Vice Presidency of the United States the single most useless job in existence and urged that it be redesigned to have more powers than an occasional tie breaking vote or promotion should the president die. His sentiments were echoed by several subsequent holders of the position.
John Nance Garner, Vice President during FDR’s first two terms, famously said that the job “wasn’t worth a bucket of warm piss.” The quotation is often rendered with “spit” as the unpleasant liquid.
Jennifer Garner, who gained stardom as CIA agent Sydney Bristow in the series Alias, is married to Ben Affleck.
The Sydney Opera house, one of the most recognizable examples of late 20th century architecture, is by some accounts the busiest opera house in the world with an average of 1,500 performances in a given year (mostly non opera obviously).
The world famous opera soprano Aprile Millo attended Hollywood High School (with me!), the sports teams of which are known as the Sheiks, in honor of Rudolph Valentino, who was laid to rest in a crypt at what is now Hollywood Forever Cemetary, and whose crypt always had fresh flowers placed in it by a mysterious woman… (plenty to work with here!)
For several years after her death, Joe Dimmagio placed flowers on Marilyn Monroe’s grave.
While Joe DiMaggio’s New York Yankee (as well as Major League Baseball) record 56-game hitting streak is one of the most storied records in sports, what’s less known is that the Boston Red Sox’ record streak was also compiled by a DiMaggio – Dom, who hit safely in 34 straight contests in 1949.
Dom scored an average of 104.6 runs/season, the best rate for any player not inducted in the Hall of Fame.
