“Red” Rosa Luxemburg was a prominent Communist party leader at the time
of the left-wing Spartacist coup attempt in 1919 Germany. She was murdered
during the suppression of the uprising.
Red - An Orchestra was an avante garde Cleveland musical troupe which folded a few years ago. Apollo’s Fire, a baroque ensemble, and the world-famous Cleveland Orchestra are now the primary performers of classical music in northeast Ohio.
The Red Orchestra (“Rote Kapelle” in German) was a code name for the WW2-era
anti-Axis Soviet espionage organization in Europe.
Nixon foreign policy advisor Henry Kissinger discussed U.S.-European relations for about half of his memoirs, White House Years. Only Vietnam was treated at greater length.
Kissinger was the 1st foreign born Secretary of State.
Three women have served as U.S. Secretary of State: Madeline Albright, Condoleeza Rice and Hillary Clinton. Two Hasidic newspapers in New York City airbrushed Clinton out of photos of the White House Situation Room, taken during the recent raid which resulted in the death of Osama bin Laden.
The radio and TV series My Little Margie portrayed the misadventures of Margie Albright (played by Gale Storm), a young woman who exasperated her advertising executive father, Vern Albright (Charles Farrell). Allbright worked at the firm of Honeywell and Todd for the exacting Mr. Honeywell (gravel-voiced Clarence Kolb).
Sadly, Hasidic Judaism seems to have contributed little if any to the phenomenal,
brilliant intellectual record for which history’s Jewish congregation of will always,
deservedly, be famous:
Playing off of RealtyChuck’s post, because that should have been the next one played.
The question of the “first” publicly targeted licensed radio station in the US has more than one answer and depends on semantics. Settlement of the “first” question may hang largely upon what constitutes “regular” programming. It is commonly attributed to KDKA in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which in October 1920 received its license and went on the air as the first US licensed commercial broadcasting station. (Their engineer Frank Conrad had been broadcasting from his own station since 1916.) Technically, KDKA was the first of several already-extant stations to receive a “limited commercial” license.
WEW in St. Louis claims to be the second-oldest commercial radio station and the oldest west of the Mississippi. Its first voice broadcast was April 26, 1921; the first voice heard was the president of St. Louis University, Rev. William Robison. Like KDKA, WEW had been broadcasting for several years (although in wireless telegraphy.)
St. Louis University’s athletic teams are nicknamed Billikens. One explanation proposed for this is that football coach John R. Bender resembled a then-popular doll known as a Billiken.
Current St. Louis basketball coach Rick Majerus has restored the Billiken look with the way he fills an XXXL sweater. He previously coached at Marquette, Ball State, and Utah.
David Letterman went to Ball State.
Letterman jackets have been around in some form for almost a century but their popularity exploded with television in the 1950s when having a character wear a leatherman jacket was an instant way to say “high school/college athlete”. Before their popularization cardigan sweaters were far more common for team members than the jackets now associated with varsity sports.
The Charge of the Light Brigade was a military attack made by British troops commanded by Lord Cardigan during the Battle of Balaclava. Due to a miscommunication by Lord Raglan, the troops attacked a much more difficult Russian position by charging through the “Valley of Death.” Nearly have the brigade was destroyed in the attack. The cause of the miscommunication is unclear, but the theory that it was due to an argument over sweater design has been conclusively disproven.
Average male life expectancy in Russia has been dropping for several decades, largely thought attributable to alcoholism and poor environmental conditions.
The UN lists says life expectancy is longest in Japan, at 78 years for men and 86.1 years for women. Lowest is Swaziland, at 39.8 years for men and 39.4 years for women.
However, the CIA Factbook, which considers more entities, pegs Japan at #5. It says Monaco is tops at 85.77 years for men and 93.84 years for women, followed by Macau, San Mario and Andorra. Swaziland is still on the bottom of the heap.
Note: That was, of course, supposed to be San Marino.
During the Eisenhower Administration, brothers John Foster Dulles and Allen Dulles were U.S. Secretary of State and Director of Central Intelligence (head of the CIA), respectively.
The only CIA director to become POTUS is George H. W. Bush
