The 1972 sf movie Silent Running, starring Bruce Dern, was filmed aboard the decommissioned aircraft carrier USS Valley Forge, which was set-dressed as a space freighter of the same name. The warship was scrapped after production wrapped.

Laura Dern was born on 10-Feb-1967 to Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd.

In “The Cowboys”, Bruce Dern became the only actor ever whose character killed John Wayne’s character in a film.

Lt. Sulu missed a number of episodes in the middle of STAR TREK’s second season because George Takei was in Georgia filming John Wayne’s The Green Berets, in which he played an ARVN officer. Most of his TREK lines were given to Ensign Chekov instead; this was especially relevant in “The Trouble with Tribbles,” in which Chekov, who had never expressed an interest in botany, nevertheless knew about quadrotriticale.

During the first year of the series, Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Uhura) was tempted to leave the show, as she wanted to pursue a Broadway career; however, a conversation with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., changed her mind. Nichols has said that King personally encouraged her to stay on the show, telling her that he was a big fan of the series. He said she “could not give up” because she was playing a vital role model for black children and young women across the country, as well as for other children who would see African Americans appearing as equals

Whoopie Goldberg has often listed Nichelle Nichols as one of her heroines. When she first saw Lt. Uhura on STAR TREK, she called to her mom “Come quick! There’s a black lady on TV, and she ain’t no maid!”

She ain’t no maid: you bet. All you’d have to do is google images for “uhura mirror mirror”.

Shuttle astronaut Mae Jemison got a bit part on ST:TNG as a transporter operator after telling a reporter that she was inspired by watching Nichelle Nichols play another spacefaring black female.

From 1983 to 1985, Mae Jemison served as a Peace Corps Medical Officer responsible for volunteers in Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Liberia was founded as an African republic for former slaves in the United States to colonize.

Liberia is the only other country besides the US with a capital named for a US President: Monrovia, for James Monroe.

James Monroe was an aide to George Washington during the American Revolution, and appears behind the general holding the (anachronistic for December 1776) American flag in Emanuel Leutze’s famous painting of the crossing of the Delaware.

The Delaware River is by far the longest river in the state of Delaware, over four times longer than the second longest river, the Choptank River.

Sarcastic Baltimore-based columnist H.L. Mencken normally referred contemptuously to the Eastern Shore section of Maryland as “Transchoptankia”.

Baltimore ranks fifth among commercially active US seaports.

There are roughly 17.07 shots in a standard fifth of Jack Daniels

Liquor is sold in fifths – a fifth of a gallon or 4/5 of a quart. This was done to hide an increase in liquor prices; liquor just after prohibition was sold in quarts, but, as prices rose, distillers chose to sell smaller bottles to hide the price increase. A similar change has happened more recently to ice cream: the standard size has changed from a half gallon to 1 1/2 quarts.

With the advent of Prohibition, the Stroh Brewery Company of Detroit turned to manufacturing such products as soft drinks and ice cream. After the 21st Amendment returned legal alcohol to store shelves, Stroh’s continued to produce the ice cream, and the product is still available in the Detroit area.
