Trivia Dominoes: Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

Homeward Bound was written by Paul Simon, sung by Simon and Garfunkel, and recorded by them on December 14, 1965.

“Homeward Bound” was featured on the first Christmastime show of SNL, hosted by Candice Bergen in 1975.

Some say that ‘homeward bound’ is the origin of the term ‘hobo’.

(My 1,000th SDMB post!)

The word hobo appeared around 1890. Its derivation is unknown.

And I don’t think Simon and Garfunkel were around in 1890.

One possible derivation of the word hobo is “hoe boy,” i.e., an itinerant farm worker.

The horse-drawn hoe was invented by the agriculturalist Jethro Tull.

Jethro was Moses’ father-in-law. Observing that Moses was overburdened with deciding disputes amongst the Israelites, Jethro suggested that Moses appoint other trusted individuals to decide cases initially, and reserve major cases to Moses. It is one of the earliest examples of a hierarchical dispute-resolution process, designed to reserve the time and efforts of the leader for the most difficult issues.

On “The Beverly Hillbillies”, Jethro’s sister Jethrine (also played by Max Baer) only appears in the first season.

Saturday Night Live did a parody of The Beverly Hillbillies called “The Bel Arabs”.

SNL premiered on NBC on October 11, 1975, under the original title of NBC’s Saturday Night.SNL has helped launch the careers of Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Jimmy Fallon, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray, Mike Myers, Amy Poehler, Adam Sandler, Conan O’Brien, Max Brooks, Stephen Colbert, Larry David, Al Franken, Bob Odenkirk, Sarah Silverman, and Robert Smige among others.

The original SNL “Not Ready for Prime Time Players” included National Lamppon editor Michael O’Donoghue, who was head writer for the show. O’Donoghue’s most notable on-screen skits where his impressions of how celebrities would react if steel needles were driven into their eyes (there was a lot of agonized screaming).

Deion “Prime Time” Sanders’ middle name is Luwynn.

Jawaharlal Nehru, his daughter Indira Gandhi, and his grandson Rajiv Gandhi, all served as Prime Minister of India.

One of the few people whom Jacqueline Kennedy criticized in her oral history tapes, recently released in their entirety, was Indira Gandhi. The former First Lady said Gandhi was a “prune bitter, kind of pushy, horrible woman.”

Indira Gandhi was the second female head of government in modern history.

Larry Doby was the second African-American to play major league baseball and the second African-American to manage in the major leagues.

Larry Doby is featured on a new series of Baseball All-Star stamps issued by the U.S. Postal Service.

To commemorate the upcoming 100th Grey Cup game this fall, Canada Post has issued a series of eight commemorative stamps, one for each CFL team. Each stamp features a significant player from the team in the foreground, with a scene from that team’s history in the background.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders stamp features George Reed, one of the best running backs in league history, in the foreground. In the background, Glen Suitor and Dave “Robokicker” Ridgeway celebrate after Ridgeway’s field goal to win the 1989 Grey Cup 43-40 over Hamilton, on the final play of what many consider the best Grey Cup game in CFL history.

ETA: Annie-Xmas’s post wasn’t there when I posted mine.

After Harry Truman removed Douglas Macarthur as commander of U.S./United Nations troops in Korea, he gave the command position to Matthew Ridgeway.
