“The Geneva Convention” refers to actually the fourth convention of Geneva, held in 1949. The three previous treaties of Geneva were signed in 1864, 1906, and 1929. This fourth convention updated the terms of the previous treaties and defined the basic, wartime rights of prisoners (civil and military), established protections for the wounded, and established protections for the civilians in and around a war zone.
