Trivia Dominoes: Play Off the Last Bit of Trivia

Edward FitzGerald, Democrat of Lakewood, is the County Executive of Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Only two of Ohio’s 88 counties have an elected county executive-style government; all of the others have three elected county commissioners.

Actress Teri Garr was born in Lakewood, Ohio.

Teri Garr has been battling multiple sclerosis for over 10 years. She first noticed symptoms while filming Tootsie in New York City over 30 years ago, in 1981.

Blondie and Dagwood Bumstead’s next-door neighbors and best friends are Herb and Tootsie Woodley.

The Epic in Miami is the name given to a National Football League AFC divisional playoff game between the San Diego Chargers and the Miami Dolphins that took place on January 2, 1982 in the Miami Orange Bowl. The game is one of the most famous in National Football League lore because of the conditions on the field, the performances of players on both teams, and the numerous records that were set. It was also referred to in the Miami Herald as the “Miracle That Died”, while Sports Illustrated dubbed it the “Game No One Should Have Lost”. The game aired on NBC with Don Criqui and John Brodie calling the action and Bryant Gumbel serving as the anchor.

It was a great game. I watched it on TV. David Woodley was the starting QB for the Miami Dolphins, but he was ineffective and was eventually replaced by backup QB Don Strock.

If you watched that game, perhaps you, too, readily recall the image of Kellen Winslow being helped off the field by two teammates.

(Kellen Winslow deserves more than an afterthought. That was maybe the most legendary game performance by any single player ever.)

For the New England Patriots to make their first Super Bowl appearance, following the 1986 NFL season, they had to win three playoff games on the road, including the AFC Championship vs. the Dolphins in the Orange Bowl in Miami. Their victory in what became known as the “Squish the Fish” game (or “Trammel the Mammals”, for pedants) was the Pats’ first *ever *win in Miami, after 18 losses. Coach Ray Berry and quarterback Tony Eason (who was replaced midway in the Super Bowl by grizzled veteran Steve Grogan) lost to the Chicago Bears, who have never returned.

"If You Leave Me Now, " a ballad written and sung by Peter Cetera, was the first song by Chicago to hit #1 on the Billboard charts.

The 1985 Chicago Bears defense, coached by Defensive Coordinator Buddy Ryan, was arguably the best-ever NFL defensive unit. In Super Bowl XX they crushed the Pats 46-10. The Bears went 15-1 that season and their only loss was, fittingly, to the Miami Dolphins to thwart their otherwise perfect season.

(ElvisL1ves, I think you meant “after the 1985 season”, not 1986?)

(Yes, the 1985 season ended in the 1986 Super Bowl. Sorry)

Buddy Ryan, who was later the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, has twin sons now coaching in the NFL. Rex is (still as of this moment) the head coach of the New York Jets (and a known foot fetishist), while Rob is the defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys).

(No worries, and ugh, thanks --I think-- I did not want to learn that Rex Ryan has a foot fetish!)

Jim Ryun (not Ryan although pronounced the same) was the last American to hold the world record in the mile. Ryun held several world records, including the 880 and the 1500 meters, and in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City he won the silver medal in the 1500 meter run. A mile, by the way, is 1609 meters.

Ryun set three world records in the mile:

3:51.3 on July 17, 1966 in Berkeley, CA
3:51.1 on June 23, 1967 in Bakersfield, CA
3:56.4 on February 19, 1971 in San Diego, CA (indoors)

Enjoy! When the news came out before a Jets/Pats game, the Pats’ Wes Welker gave a classic interview, smoothly slipping in numerous foot and toe references with no apparent effort. The league fined him heavily, but damn, it was worth it).

Jim Ryun served in Congress as a movement-conservative Republican from Kansas, alongside Washington representative Steve Largent, a former Seattle Seahawk who held most major NFL receiving records when he retired.

(Great, thanks)

Steve Largent was a stud, retiring with many NFL receiving records while playing his entire career for the 1976 NFL expansion team Seattle Seahawks. Largent caught most of his passes from lefty QB Jim Zorn.

However, the definitive stud at wide receiver was (is!) Jerry Rice, who played most of his career with the San Francisco 49ers. The Niners clinched the second seed in this season’s NFC playoffs today.

Go Niners!

Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose (RNAS Culdrose, also known as HMS Seahawk; ICAO: EGDR) is a Royal Navy airbase near Helston on the Lizard Peninsula of Cornwall. It currently has three major roles: serving the Fleet Air Arm’s front line Sea King and Merlin helicopter squadrons; providing search and rescue for the South West region; and training divers for the Royal Navy.

The westernmost significant town in England is the Cornwall port of Penzance, immortalized as the home of pirates in a Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera.

Charles, Prince of Wales and heir to the British throne, also holds the titles of Duke of Cornwall in England and Duke of Rothesay in Scotland.

The running character of Duke in the ***Doonesburry ***comic strip was originally based on gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson.

Duke Kahanamoku won a gold medal in the 100 meter freestyle in the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm. These Olympics were the last to issue medals of solid gold, and were the games in which Jim Thorpe competed.

When the Stockholm collided with the Andrea Doria, Linda Morgan was catapulted from her cabin on the Doria onto the deck of the Stockholm. She survived with only minor injuries.

On December 6, 1917, the Mont-Blanc collided with the Imo in the Narrows of Halifax harbour. The Mont-Blanc was fully loaded with war-time munitions, bound for France. She caught fire and exploded 25 minutes later. It was the largest man-made explosion prior to the advent of nuclear bombs. 2,000 people were killed and the City of Halifax was devastated.
