As Queen of Canada, Queen Elizabeth is represented at the federal level in Canada by the Governor General, and at the provincial level by Lieutenant Governors.

A handy acronym to remember most Canadian provinces bordering the USA from west to east is BASMOQ: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec.

Saskatchewan’s economy is the fastest growing in Canada. In fact, in 2007, when the mortgage/housing bubble crisis hit most of North America, house prices in Regina and Saskatoon began to skyrocket.

Winston Churchill was first elected to Parliament as a member of the Conservative Party. He crossed over to the Liberal Party in 1904 over the Conservatives’ tariff policies. As the Liberals started losing power to the Labour Party, Churchill, after losing an election as a Liberal, rejoined the Conservative Party in 1924. The Conservatives mistrusted him and he became isolated from the party, who didn’t like his constant criticism of their foreign policy, notably his warnings about the dangers of Hitler. He denounced the Munich Agreement, and, when Hitler invaded Poland, they were forced to admit he had been right all along and he was named Prime Minister.

David Lloyd George, a Liberal leader and British prime minister at the end of World War I, was a mentor to Winston Churchill, but was a bit taken aback by his driving ambition. He once joked, “Winston would skin his own mother to make a drum with which to beat his own praises.”

Winston Churchill won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953. for his “mastery of historical and biographical description as well as for brilliant oratory in defending exalted human values.”

A young Churchill is reported to have said: “We are all worms. But I believe I am a glow-worm.”
