When George first saw her, he is reputed to have said to a friend, “Harris, I am not well, pray get me a glass of brandy.” The couple eventually separated, and George tried to have her divorced by an Act of Parliament, but was unsuccessful. She died shortly after George succeeded to the throne. He excluded her from the coronation at Westminster Abbey.
The Duke of Wellington disliked Caroline, but she was popular with many of the common people. Once a mob tried to make him declare his support for her, and he said, “God save the queen, and may all your wives be like her.” (She was supposedly unfaithful to George, and he was certainly unfaithful to her.)
