Aaron Eckardt is the first and to date only live-action actor in the Batman film series to play both Harvey Dent and his villainous alter-ego, Two-Face. Previously, Billy Dee Williams played Harvey Dent in Batman (1989), while Tommy Lee Jones played Two-Face in Batman Forever (1995). Richard Moll played both roles in Batman (1992), which was animated.
ENglish physician William Harvey was the first doctor to propose that blood circulates, but it wasn’t until Marcello Malphigi discovered the capillaries that Harvey’s theory was confirmed.
William Harvey Hospital was built in Ashford, England in his honor.
Harveytoons “Herman and Katnip” cartoons were considered to be the most violent of the proliferation of Cat vs. Mouse cartoons of the 1950’s and 1960’s (Tom & Jerry, Pixie & Dixie & Mr. Jinks, etc.), and not eclipsed in that role until the Simpsons show’s parody “Itchy and Scratchy”.
Drummer Herman “Ze German” Rarebell spoke English beter than most of his bandmates in The Scorpions, and therefore wrote a lot of their lyrics (imagine how much sillier the lyrics to “Rock You Like a Hurricane” might have sounded otherwise!).
The heavy-metal group Rammstein, notable for their success worldwide despite performing almost solely in German, takes its name from Ramstein, the site of the main US Air Force base in Germany. The group added a second M to make the name mean “battering stone”.
Before moving to the NFL, Super Bowl-winning coach Bill Parcells was head football coach at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Bill Parcells got his nickname, The Big Tuna, while the linebackers coach for the 1980 New England Patriots. When running a drill, he thought the players weren’t listening, and asked them “What do you think I am? Charlie the Tuna?”
Charlie the Tuna was voiced by Herschel Bernardi
Herschel Bernardi was a victim of the Hollywood blacklist in the 1950s, making his role in The Front (1976) especially poignant
(I remember watching him in Arnie on Saturday nights in the early 1970s.)
Queen Elizabeth II visited Old North Church in Boston during her state visit to the U.S. for the 1976 Bicentennial celebrations. One hundred and one years earlier, two lanterns were hung from the church’s steeple to signal Paul Revere to begin his famous ride to warn of the march of British troops.
off-game: shouldn’t that be “two hundred and one years earlier”?
Candlepin bowling was invented in Boston in 1880.
I loved that show.
Back in play:
Boston Brand was a trapeze artist who was murdered during his act. He continued to live on as the superhero Deadman, who tracked down “The Hook,” who was the person who shot him. The strip is usually associated with Neal Adams, but the artist for the first story was Carmine Infantino (who died yesterday
)
Carmine Infantino is the (alleged) creator of superheroes Kid Flash, the Elongated Man and Batgirl, and villains Captain Cold, Captain Boomerang and Mirror Master. His streamlined design on the rebooted Flash was a major contributor to the start of the Silver Age.
(The Flash was my favorite comic as a kid. Can you tell?)
During the May 23, 1701 execution of Captain Kidd the pirate, the hangman’s rope broke, and Kidd was hanged on the second attempt. His body was gibbeted over the River Thames at Tilbury Point for three years as a warning to future would-be pirates.
In 1996, a very talented and promising Dallas Mavericks squad was torn apart because of a bitter feud between guard Jason Kidd and teammate Jimmy Jackson, who were involved in a love triangle with soul singer Toni Braxton.
Jason Kidd grew up in Oakland, CA and as a kid he played basketball on Oakland’s city courts. He often played with/against future NBA All-Star Gary Payton on those courts.
Oakland is the place about which Gertrude Stein commented in Everybody’s Autobiography “There is no there there.” She was specifically referring to her razed childhood home there. The adjacent city of Berkeley has erected a sign reading “HERETHERE” along the BART tracks at the city line.
Ernest Orlando Lawrence was an American physicist who worked on the early cyclotron and the Manhattan Project. He is the “Lawrence” of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
