Pulling your hair in a loose ponytail then folding it up and tucking it into the loose hair at the base of the pony and securing it gives you the hairstyle known as a Gibson.

Building upon the groundbreaking work of A.C. Van Wyck in 1946, UK scientists Raymond Goldstein, Robin Ball and Patrick Warren developed an equation of state for the human ponytail.

Warren Burger was finally confirmed as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court after three previous nominees- G. Harold Carswell, Clement Haynsworth, and Abe Fortas- had been rejected by the US Senate.

Supporting Carswell’s nomination, Sen. Roman Hruska (R.- Nebraska) responded to criticism that Carswell had been a mediocre judge:

“Even if he were mediocre, there are a lot of mediocre judges and people and lawyers. They are entitled to a little representation, aren’t they, and a little chance? We can’t have all Brandeises, Frankfurters and Cardozos.”

The word frankfurter comes from Frankfurt, Germany, where pork sausages similar to hot dogs originated. These sausages, Frankfurter Würstchen, were known since the 13th century and given to the people on the event of imperial coronations, starting with the coronation of Maximilian II, Holy Roman Emperor as King.

Fortas was an Associate Justice of the Court. In June, 1968, Chief Justice Warren announced his retirement, and President Johnson nominated Fortas to be Chief Justice. The Senate filibustered the nomination, which finally was voted on in October, 1968. Fortas got a bare majority in his favour, not the two-thirds voted needed to confirm. He withdrew his nomination. Given the timing of the vote and elections, Johnson did not try to nominate anyone else. In 1969, President Nixon nominated Warren Burger to be Chief Justice. The Senate confirmed Burger.

After withdrawing his nomination for Chief Justice, Fortas continued on as an Associate Justice, but the next year, 1969, had to resign in the face of a financial conflict of interest allegation. President Nixon first nominated Clement Haynsworth to replace Fortas as Associate Justice, but the Senate rejected the nomination. Nixon then nominated Harrold Carswell, but the Senate rejected him as well. Nixon finally nominated Harry Blackmun of Minnesota, who was confirmed by the Senate.

And astorian, Warren’s and Burger’s title was “Chief Justice of the United States,” not “of the Supreme Court.”

Ronald Reagan’s ex-wife was Jane Wyman, who won an Oscar for Johnny Belinda.
